  1. MÉXICO.

    Baja California is a penninsula, wich includes two states (both mexican states, of course): Baja California and Baja California Sur. The current state of California belonged before to México (lost in mexican-american war on century 19), and the former name was Alta California or Territorio de Alta California, so there were Alta California or North California, and Baja California or South California. After Alta California became part of US they named only as California, but in México Baja California territory was separated in one state (northern Baja California) and one territory (Baja California Sur) wich became State on century 20.

    "Alta" means "Upper" and referes to northern;

    "Baja" means "lower" and referes to suthern.

    In Baja California (the northern state) are located the cities of Tijuana (border to San Diego), Mexicali (border to Caléxico) and Ensenada; in Baja California Sur are located the cities of San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas (these two cities are known together as "Los Cabos") and La Paz.
