Your answers proved to me that media is a great means for brainwashing.I agree that Russia may have some imperialistic interests with regard to Ossetia, but the just think it was Georgia who unleashed this war and attacked its own people..How else could Russia respond. I speak both languages (English and Russian), and I saw CNN was giving a wrong translation of Putin's speech..So it is up to you to decide which media to believe..or better go to Ossetia and Russia and you ll see all those georgians escaping from South Ossetia to find refuge in Russia

  1. Russia...  how do you think the US would respond if Chavez and Venezuela attacked our ally Columbia?...  Georgia attacked Russia's ally in the Russian's backyard, what did they expect to happen?...

this could also be advantageous to the US as far as Iran is concerned...  Georgia (a US ally) threatened South Ossentia (a Russian ally) and Russia responded...  this is nearly the exact same situation with Iran but reversed as far as the US and Russia are concerned...  Iran (a Russian ally) threatens Isreal (a US ally)...  so the fact that Russia attacked one of our allies to protect one of their allies strengthens our case for possible military action against Iran in defense of our allies in the Middle East...  basically, if you can do it, we can do it...

  2. Like in every war both sides have some claim to being right and both sides are also in the wrong.  Russian cries of the two provinces not being really part of Georgia but inhabited by Russians is simply because the Russians made it that way.  Those two areas were made part of the Peoples Republic of Georgia by the Soviet Union to reward the leadership by making then "independent countries and getting to join the UN" but also the Soviets ensured control by making sure those areas were settled by Russians who would loyal to them.  After the breakup of the Soviet Union those areas declared independence and after some fighting the Georgian government sort of sat on a cease fire line but the Russians quickly declared the two areas as independent countries (no one else recognizes them as independent including the UN) and then granted the people Russian citizenship, next move was to move Russian peace keepers in to protect the Russian citizens; so very convenient make other people citizens of your country then say you have to protect them.  Georgia should have a right to control it's country and since the Soviets are the ones who made those areas part of Georgia they really have no claim to say it isn't but at the same time it really was stupid for the Georgians to decide right now was the time t regain control.  The Russians and residents of both provinces used forced movement to get Georgians plus other people considered pro-Georgia out and took away the land and farms of those people to loyal supporters.  If the Russian claims of the Georgians kiling civilians is true, honestly a big if, as most were killed by bombing and artillery so which side was doing it and the Russians have been known to do things and blame an opponent (Katyn Forest massacre in early WW2 Poland is a prime example) so any evidence they come up with is suspect, the Georgians were wrong.  I believe right is mostly of the side of Georgia but the might is on the side of Russia.

  3. georgia of course.

i'm writing this for the third time today

georgians just entered tskhinvali to protect the georgians living there. tskhinvali is said to be russian but there still are georgians living there. they were shooted for whole 4 days and then the georgians entered the region. and that was all the russians wanted to enter georgia passing through roki , and saying they were trying to protect their people they started bombing the capital of the country and other cities. seeing as you ask that question i don't think you have a full view of the situation. i have cos i'm georgian, and the one who lost friends who were trying to save ppl in the willages and cities which russians entered or bombed...just don't read russian web sites so you get the right information, that's the only country saying awful lies...

  4. It's not a black and white situation.  At the time of the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, the S. Ossetian province wanted to remain with Russia, or more particularly with North Ossetia. They wanted to separate from Georgia, most of the little population did not recognize the Georgian central government and fighting broke out. In the mid-90's, a cease fire and truce was signed by all parties, and all sides agreed to have peacekeepers in the province, one being the Russians.

Georgia broke the truce that they signed when they attempted to take control of the region last Friday. Many of the people in South Ossetia are Russian nationals or have Russian passports, the currency is the Russian ruble, not Georgia's currency and most importantly, the people are ethnically related to North Ossetia, across the border in Russia.

While it may look like a violation of Georgia's territory, the squabble is not as black and white as you may think. The timing of the recent conflict was calculated...based on two events: all eyes on the west were on the Olympics and Pres. Bush is soon to leave office. Georgia gambled that Bush would (will) not let them down.

Unfortunately for them, they'll be left high and dry, the same way the Czechs and Hungarians were in the 50s and 60s when the Ruskies clampled down on them too, even tho they called for western assistance. The only support they'll get is rhetorical and a few UN sanctions.

  5. Both US and Russian media are lying. Thats obvious, as mass-media is a weapon too.

Its difficult to expect any pro-Russian stuff from CNN, right?

On the first day of fighting there was a nice movie by CNN. Featuring dark night and bright flares of starting missiles in the background of voice telling us about Russian invasion. Wait, it was only evening in Georgia and russians have joined war in the midday. It takes time to send the movie to some studio and prepare some breaking-news, at least an hour I'd say. And camera men should travel that to the front, Tskhinvali city is far from Georgian capital city of Tbilisi. So that couldn't be that night, this is previous night: August 07. And there were no russian forces in Georgia at that moment... So missiles are Georgian!

Lets take a closer look on them. They're flying in the very fast rate. Axelerate, then rocket engine stops and disappears in the night. Do you know what this weapon is? It is 'Grad' soviet era indirect missile artillery designed to kill lots of infantry in the field. It is useless against tanks and strongpoints. And it is very inacurate... Warhead turns into numerous splinters on detonation effectively killing everyone around. And 'Grad' provides rain of such rockets. Rain of death.

Do you imagine this? Without declaration of war, warnings et.c. in the middle  of night, when people are sleeping at their homes someone bombards city with 'Grad'. This is not a police action against rebels, this attempt to kill as many of them (children, women, everyone) as possible and make others run in terror. That exactly happened. Saakashvili is a war criminal.

  6. It honestly depends on who you are. Its in Russia's strategic interest to control their neighbors and not have such a pro American country right next to them. They also know that besides scolding them there is nothing we can really do. We aren't gonna go to war over it...unfortunately that is how world wars start though.

Its in America's strategic interest to support Georgia but were in a tight spot because one, well look really bad to all the struggling countries that we claim to protect. If we don't actually protect them. On the other hand, who here really thinks were going to risk war with Russia over Georgia...

So Russia knows this and their making a move, its just like chess. When you know that your enemy is protecting too many places you can attack where you please because we are stretched too thin.

America, is being really stupid right now, and I say that as the wife and daughter of veterans. (my hubby isn't a vet yet to be clear, hes in training)

We refuse to have a draft because rich people don't want their kids in the military, its the truth. Every other country that wants to go out and play protector of the world at least has all their citizens involved. If your not apart of the military family or the government family you have no idea how bad things really are. When I was civilian only in college, the kids there were so naive about the world, thats how most American are. We are going bankrupt trying to pretend like everything is ok here when its not. Globalization is just beginning and Americans have had it good for a long time and now our nation is lazy and fat.

Its sad cause I love this country but were not doing the right things and our stupid corrupt political leaders dont give a ****. They have a cushy little job and play politics...Russia's making a move, China's making a move. Even Iran is making a move, and were stalemated (chess) We cant move because we've made too many mistakes, we now have to wait for our opponents to slip up. Lol, why does no one seem to notice this. We are seriously going to get checkmated.

Tomorrow China could pull all their money out of this country and trigger a recession. Then they could team up with Iran and many other small countries that want to really hurt America. They could do that tomorrow if they wanted and what would we be able to do...nothing. Well nuke everyone, and that would be grand tsk tsk.

I'm going off into a tangent so I will stop.

If I was Georgia I would have to ask myself lets see where my friendship with America is getting me. Now I trust in America and I think if push came to shove we would defend Georgia because hypocrisy is a worse sin than idiocy. With that said, that is how world wars start. And since I want to grow old with my Husband I pray that doesn't happen

  7. Russia.

Because they protected the citizens of South Osetia and didn't attack Georgia. Action is ended at the border of South Osetia.

    Saakashvilli is liar.

  8. Georgia

  9. Well I suppose it would be the country that is attempting to retain its national identity despite the superior firepower of the foe.  You choose, the supreme diety gave you the power of reason.  Look at both sides and you choose.  Who here in this situation is trying to retain a national identity and a democratic form of government.  Who is trying to re establish an empire.  I dunno, I have my opinion but that's what it is, an opinion.  Good luck to you.

  10. If you know what to listen to and what to read you would not have to ask this question. But as you have, then I must tell you that Georgia started this conflict thinking it would elicit no responce from Russia as its last two small adventures only got verbal warnings. What a mistake, rather like the argentinians a long time ago. The Georgian president should and hopefully will be tried for war crimes I think you will agree when the truth surfaces through the american bullshit.

Did you see his face on the newsrel when he thought he was under attack it  said a lot. Pity so many lads have died but thats what comes of having a nutter for president.
