  1. paraguay...

  2. This is a French coin.  The legends read "REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE."  France didn't use this design in the coins of its colonies, such as Algeria, French Equatorial Africa, and French Indo-China.

Its value depends its date, denomination, and condition (grade).  This same design appeared on 7 different denominations/series of French coins:

    - 50 Centimes, 1 Franc, and 2 Francs silver coins minted from the late 1800s through 1919.  These are worth, respectively, about $1.15, $2.30, and $4.60 for their silver value alone, with certain dates - as well as coins in top grades - worth more.

    - 5 Francs silver coins minted from 1960-1969, worth about $5 each for their silver value.

    - 1/2 Franc or 1 Franc copper nickel coins, minted from 1965-1997 and 1960-1997, respectively.  None of these coins is especially scarce, and each is basically just worth a few cents, when sold in bulk lots of modern French or world coins.

    - 5 Francs copper-nickel coins minted from 1970-1997.  Most that one would likely encounter, with dates from 1970-1975, 1978, 1987, and 1991-1992, had high mintages and are basically just worth a few cents each, in bulk lots of French or world coins.  However, there are some very low mintage dates, particularly during the later part of this period, that may be worth somewhat more: perhaps even a dollar or two if in high grade.

Outside of any of these coins' value to coin collectors, France has converted to a new monetary system, the Euro, and these old Francs coins no longer have monetary value, nor are they any longer convertible into Euros.

To find out what your coin is worth, check the online catalog of your local public library system to find out if any of your branches has the Standard Catalog of World Coins, a commonly-found reference book that lists retail prices for world coins of many nations, including France.  (The publisher of this book has a website, http://www.krause.com/static/coins.htm, but charges a monthly subscription fee to view current prices.)

You can also post a photo of the other side of the coin - the one listing the denomination and date - or just post details about those.
