  1. For the majority of athletes its not about the money. i'm not sure how much they get but Michael Phelps sponsors said they'd give him 1million dollars for getting eight golds... so thats 125,000 for each gold. He said he wasn't fussed about the money though, just wanted to be the best in history.


  2. In the UK you don't get officially awarded a cash prize but you are more likely to get lottery funding and sponsorship to help with training costs etc.

  3. The USOC has paid prize money to its winning Olympians since 1984, this year giving out $25,000 to gold medal winners, $15,000 to those who take home a silver and $10,000 for a bronze. Some of the richer U.S. sport federations give additional prize money to their winners as well.  

  4. I've heard there is $1 million US on the table for long distance swimming events for US athletes (1500 mens and 800 womens) + 500K for the coach. I've heard the offer is still open but could only find old artiles about it
