  1. The Sumerian language in southern Mesopotamia which would be Iraq.  See list below.

  2. The city-states of Mesopotamia (The land between the rivers - present day Iraq) first had written language called "cuneiform."  That was ~3000 BCE, so I'd guess you'd say that Sumeria, Mesopotamia had the first people who could read.

  3. Your question is rather vague.

does drawing pictures qualify as writing as well?

" writing "does not have a clearcut definition. if you mean "a system as a means of communication" then give me time, i might be able to dig something up for you ...

  4. It depends on where you draw the line between drawing pictures to tell a story and actually writing. Having said that, the script was invented in Mesopotamia. So the answer is : Iraq.

  5. I think the oldest known examples of writing were on baked clay tablets in a form of writing called 'cuneiform.'  It was a very angular sort of script, and was found in the region once occupied by the Sumerians, which is now in the Middle East, in the region between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.

I believe that the Chinese also developed writing early in their history, but if it predates the cuneiform examples I can't say for certain.
