Which country would you guess has a lower population density, Norway or Italy? Why?

Norway.

The subarctic climate lend the imagination the idea that Norway would have less people due to the inhospitable climate.

One reason is Norway is located at a much higher latitude.  Much of Norway is mountainous and cold.  Most Norwegians live at the south end of the country.  The rest of the country is sparsely populated.  Norway's population distribution is similar to Canada.
