  1. I was intrigued by the total portion of your question and disappointed by the request for statistics, especially since you failed to define value, your time frame, or your criteria

    If you are really concerned with research and not with development, the answer is clearly government sponsored research. If you need statistics, look at the list of Nobel prize winners in physics, chemistry and medicine, and see where they did their work. Consider universities and Bell Labs as government funded.

    On the other hand, this says nothing about value per dollar spent.

    Of course, if you think development counts as research, then the answer is private industry. So, do you think of Edison as an inventor or a researcher?
