Question:

Which cruise line would be the best to go to Mexican Rievra?

My main concern is with the staterooms... I have looked at many of the pictures of the staterooms and they look old and not really nice; except for Holland America. I also have heard that allot of people who like to "party" (get drunk and are very rude [not all people who go on carnival]) like to go on the Carnival Cruise Lines - which is not what I am looking for.

So if you have traveled to more than just one cruise line what do you think. Thanks!

  1. My favourite boat in the Mexican Rivera is the Golden Princess, it is the identical twin to the boat I took to the caribbean in February. The Grand Princess is the one I went on and it was in immaculate shape, and it was older that the Golden Princess. I think Princess is great when it comes to upkeep, not to mention the fun there is to be had on a princess cruise.

  2. If you want a larger stateroom, Carnival in general has the biggest staterooms.

Royal Caribbean is a step up, in general from Carnival

Princess is comparible to Royal Caribbean.

All these lines have good and bad about them.  As far as drunks...they can be anywhere.  Depending upon the time of year and the itinerary.

They all have the infamous buffet...lol...

Princess, open 24 hours...but they only offer unsweetened iced tea to drink, coffee, tea etc.  I have to say, they had the best spread.

Royal Caribbean ...offers iced tea, lemonade, fruit punch, to drink as well...not quite as diverse a spread as Princess.

Carnival is the same as Royal Caribbean.

I would look at price, itinerary, etc. and then compare ...

  3. Well since I have done them all I can probably say that you sound like you would really like Holland America Lines.  It is a step up from Carnival (who actually owns Holland America Lines) and Royal Caribbean.  They are the two lines that do most of the regular 7 day Mexican Riviera cruises.

The typical; sailing departs Los Angeles/Long Beach on Sunday and sails to Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas, returning to Los Angeles one week later.

I sit here and overlook the Queen Mary and the Carnival Cruise lines pier and see their ships each week.  They like RCL sail on Sunday so as to attract the honeymooners that will marry on Saturday.

The one week programs attract a different crowd than you might think.  You can sail on a Carnival Cruise and find a lot of older people during the off season but the party atmosphere will still prevail.  Holland American tends to cater to a more mature, experienced cruise passenger and by the sounds of what you have said, you might just be the likely candidate for HAL.

The ships that are doing the 7 days sailing are not the newest and the biggest that either line operates.  Those sail out of Miami.

One thing to keep in mind though is that one of the ports of call is Cabo San Lucas and that is subject to tidal conditions as they have some of the highest tides int he world there and they have to tender passengers back and forth as there is no dock.

Another thing to remember is that come September there are what are called "repositioning" cruises available that feature the Mexican Riviera.  These are ships that have been in Alaska during the summer and are repositioning to the Caribbean for the winter.  Some really great prices for the Mexican Riviera with nice itineraries.  You might have to fly back but they have packages that include that as well.  Just a thought.  These are repeated come late spring when the ships return to Alaska.

Lovely ships, great service, nice staterooms.

Whatever you choice, best wishes for a smooth sailing and the time of your life!  Bon Voyage!!

  4. We've found that we don't spend a lot of time in the stateroom. All that said, the newer ships are usually going to have the edge, regardless of cruise line.

There do seem to be more party people on CCL, particularly on the shorter 3 and 4 day trips. And, there are also likely to be more out-of-control children which are often more disruptive than drunks. Lines like HAL or Celebrity tend to cater to older pax and have fewer children.

Not mentioned but important to many: Food varies widely between the lines. CCL food has improved greatly and is good but, IMHO not as good as HAL, RCCL, Princess, or Celebrity.

  5. The princess diamond! But i don't think it goes there this time of year, more spring time. The staterooms are not old and I find them quite nice. Yes they are not huge but you won't need to spend alot of time in them anyways. There are not that many rude drunk people. Its fairly civilized. Carnival is a great cruise line, i loved it! There were hardly any annoying people. I really couldn't have asked for a better cruise actually. It was perfect! I went on the Carnival Valor to the eastern caribbean.

I'm not sure where you get your info, but cruises are alot better then you seem to think.

  6. I went on Celebrity Cruises down to the Mexican Rivera and had a blast. I think though that Celebrity stopped going to the Mexican Rivera. I think you can go from the fall up until April, as that is when the cruise lines start heading up to Seattle for the Alaskan cruises. I would also recommend Royal Caribbean as they have some great deals and the rooms are really nice, with lots to do on the ship, and they go to the Mexican Rivera. I think that you would like this best. I also think that Holland America would be a bad choice as they tend to have more of an older crowd and you might not have as many people your age as you would if you went on a different cruise line. Good Luck.

  8. I would say Royal Caribbean. Our regular stateroom cabin was more than adequate and most are par for the course. The RCCL cabin however had a single bed unit of queen size, a sofa, end tables and a small coffee table as well as a desk, chair, and a TV unit. We had more than enough room to move around. The bathroom was adequate but the shower was a tad on the small side as I am a large male. In all, I felt the room was very comfortable and roomey. On other ships you have two single beds that can be move together to make one standard sized bed with precious little room to move around the bed once it was together. There were only chairs to sit in, no sofa unit. The bathroom was about the same, maybe a tad smaller. The RCCL cruise was mush better if you want a more mature guest list and less partying. Its annoying enough when your trying to get away and people are being rude and loud runing your trip. There was precious little of this on our RCCL trip. A balcony room is a good choice. We didn't think we'd use it much, but we did. You find yourself taking a break during the day and it was nice to come back to a cleaned room, take a nap or just relax out on the balcony and watch the sea go by. It was more interesting when you were entering or leaving a port of call, you could see the islands and the people, a rewarding experience. In all you really won't spend too much time in your cabin unless you deliberately plan on living on room service the whole trip which would defeat the reason for taking a cruise. We took a rest period in ours after shore excursions, and then slept in it at night. Otherwise we were usually out of the cabin unless we needed to retrieve something or change clothes for some reason like we decided to go to the pool or spa.

  9. Carnival.  They have larger staterooms than most at 187 sq ft.  We do not spend much time in the room,l so we always get the cheapest inside room.

As for Carnival being a party boat full of drunks, we have never seen this, and that is the only line we cruise with.  We go in the off season, when the kids are in school.  Unless you are going on spring break, then they are pretty mellow.  They will not allow an under 21 person to go unless they are with a parent or guardian who is 25 or over.

  10. I've been on Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean Cruise lines and I prefer Carnival on all counts.  Especially service and size of staterooms.  The obnoxious drunks are about the same on all cruise lines, they are usually a VERY small percentage of the passengers.

  11. if you want to avoid the drunks go on a 7 or 8 day cruise ..the price keep the party hearty crowd away.i like carnival as the cabins are larger. and on a longer cruise a few square feet matter

  12. Your stateroom is very important.  The only reason people say they don't spend time in there staterooms, is because they get cheap cabins or inside cabins.  We always book a suite and always have a balcony.  Enjoying breakfast on your balcony is great.  You WILL spend time in your cabin if you get a suite.

Royal Caribbean and Princess are great cruise lines to go on.  If you go on Princess, try to book a Vista Suite for the Mexican Riveria.  This suite is on the very back of the ship with a huge balcony - we had this one on the Princess Star a couple years ago.  If you go Royal, try to book an Owners Suite.  You will love it.

  13. Carnival is DEFINETLY the cruiseline which has the most party ppl. I would personally choose either Royal Caribbean or Princess.
