Question:

Which current NBA players would do well in the "Jordan era"? (1990s)?

Okay, so I've heard a lot about how the NBA has become watered down, less competitive, less physical, and less intense in recent days, especially with all of these recent rule changes.

But imagine if we could, in 2008, go back to the style of basketball played in Michael Jordan's time. Which players today do you think would excel in that environment, and which players would not?

  1. LeBron and Kobe would definately do well coz of their athletism and competetive spirit. Dwight Howard and KG would do well at post as well. I dont think Carmelo Anthony would as prolific back then as he is now, having to play against a Ewing or a Shaq(when he was at Magics) every night, I also doubt if D.Wade's reverse jams on Centers and PFs would be tolerated in that era's defense

  2. For the most part, most Hard-Nose physical players would do fine...

Alot of the International Players, game wouldn't do as well

but soft players like Dirk, Gasol not so well....put it this way Dirk would of never won a MVP, if he played in the 90's

Players Like Ginobli, Anderson Varejao who do alot of flopping, wouldnt be going to the Free throw line, they wouldnt be getting the calls back in the day

  3. Jordan never had to face a zone defense in the watered down 90s.. Jordan wouldn't be able to survive a game against the zone defense

  4. 90's defense is so overrated ... i think w/o Zone defense .. some player ( Lebron and D Wade who likes to attack rim often ) will do even better ...

    but ..

    Kobe

    Lebron

and other elite players will do just fine in 90's

  5. Some would do well, I think Lebron James would do well because of his athleticism and his strength. The same goes for Dwight Howard.

On the other end of the spectrum, I don't think Yao Ming would do as well. He'd be contending with big beefy guys like Ewing, Olajuwon, Robinson or Mourning....he would be a slightly better version of Gheorghe Muresan. There are no centers except maybe Dwight Howard who come close to being as much of a challenge..

  6. The Zone defense of today is a toned down defensive scheme and is not as tough as you think it is. The defensive three second prohibits the centers (even the forwards) to patrol the lane and give driving players a hard time of knocking down shots. This anti-defense rules are what's crippling the defense of today. Very much unlike the defensive players of the yesteryears that can stay with their guard through the hand-check. Prohibition of which well made the NBA "geared more towards offense".

NBA players that can excel in the 1990's are:

Amare Stoudamire, Dwight Howard, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade. Mainly because they are good one-on-one ofensive threats and have the strength to blow off defenders.

(I don't have to include Kobe, Tim, KG and the likes because they have played in the 90's and have experienced it's toughness, I think they averaged less points during their stay in the era?).

    Hope this helps.

    JD:

The 81 points was a product of:

    1. No-hand check rule. Since Kobe became untouchable! Without anybody touching him he scored almost at will. Those who dared touching the guy got handed out with fouls.

Aftermath: Defenders applied the foulest defense of all: The FLOP.

    2. Sheer determination to win.

    3. Of course greed. LOL. Admit it or not when already shot so many, he could have passed since the defense is targeting him instantaneously that could have resulted in easy shots, he just kept coming and that's why he had that record. Same thing with the outsanding scoring surges in history. (Wilt's, Jordan's, Thompson's, Gervin's). All those guys was scoring greedy. LOL.

  9. kobe bryant, lebron james, and kevin garnett.

    b/c their level of competitiveness.

these guys are the most fierce players today.

i believe these guys would do well in any era.

  10. Every player would fit in just fine. Now, in the 80's, no one would fit cause hardly anyone plays physical.

  11. well if you really think about it they didnt have to deal with zone defenses. and if kobe played back then he would probably do very good. knowing that he dropped 81 points on a team with zone which is designed to shut down outside scorers. i think had kobe been around more in that era he would have scored well over 100 in a game against just man on man d.

  12. D Wade

    Tim Duncan

    Kobe Bryant

    Lebron James

    Kevin Garnett

    Chauncey Billups

    Dwight Howard

    Steve Nash
