Which deck is best?

Question

I'm going on a cruise for the first time, and I don't know which deck will be best to stay on. I want to be able to see the ocean, and they all offer oceanview staterooms with picture windows, but I want to make sure that I won't be underwater. I mean, I want to see the TOP of the ocean! lol This is the decks in the order that they go, from top to bottom. Which would you suggest? Thanks!

All the cruise cabins are above water so even if you get a room on the lowest deck you will see the top of the water. It really doesn't matter which deck you get your room on becuase they are all pretty much the same, its just up to personal preference. I like the middle of the ship becuase it may move less and is close to the elevators/stairs. its not noisy being close to the elevators and its nice being able ot hop on the elevator quickly. Some people say to make sure your cabin isn't one level below a very busy/noisy part of the ship such as the casino or theater. Also, its suggested to make sure you don't get one of those conjoined rooms where one room connects to the other, they can be louder and you'll hear your neighbor more. Finally, I'd suggest not getting the very bottom deck just becuase there isn't much on that level and if you get an ocean view room you want to see the ocean better a little higher up. Also if you are on the level of the casino or dining room it will save time and an elevator ride to get to what you want to do. All ships are different so these things may be on different levels. But with the decks you mentioned I'd suggest the Main or Upper deck.

Choose a outside (seaside)  cabine to get a window cabin. Dont choise a porthole cabin since they always on the lower decks. If it isnt to expensive, choise a balcany (veranda) cabin especaly if your cruise is in warm water area (like the carrebean). Try to stay away from the noise. If youre one that like to sleep at night try to get far away from the night club or the casino (at least a deck or two or several cabins away) Try to get a cabin a few cabins away from the elevators since they noise a lot, espealy on older ships. If you dont  have a friend next door dont choise cabins that have door between them (for noise). In most cases, the higher the deck the better is the cabin and the higher is the price. Have fun! OK, first of all the deck names are not the same on all cruise ship or cruise lines.  The name and number of decks depends on the size of the ship.  The newer ships have more decks for cabins.  I have stayed on decks 8,  9, and  10 and I just prefer the higher decks.  I also always pay the extra for a balcony cabin because I have found that they are more comfortable for me and offer the opportunity to sit outside without interruptions from other any time of day or night.  I especially like the balcony cabins at night in the Caribbean.

You will also find a difference of opinion on whether you should get a cabin forward, middle or back of the ship.  Some say the ride is smoother in the middle and on a lower deck.  I disagree because the ships being used these days have stabilizers that are like under water wings that keep the ship from rocking and motion in general is almost always very minimal.  Most of the time you don't even know you are moving.  

Most ships have the main dining rooms in the rear and the show room and gymnasium in the front.  The walk from the front to the rear of the newer ships can be a long way since the ships are 800 to 900 feet long.  Most new ships have three sets of elevator/stairway bays, one front, one mid ship and one aft.   I suggest staying a few cabins away from the  front or rear elevator/stairway bays.  The ones closes to the elevator, especially the midship ones, can be noisy at night with people traffic.

So get a balcony cabin as high up as you can afford.

All passenger cabins are above the water line. The higher up on a ship you go the more money a cabin will cost. A cabin at the front or  back of the ship get the most up and down movement (think see-saw) a middle cabin is better. A cabin at the bottom of the ship (Riviera) gets alot of machinery vibration, and one at the top (Sun) get alot of side-ways sway.
