I mean job demands.

is it social work or English teacher?

which one of these two is worth studying 4 years in college for to get a job in Puerto Rico?

and why is it so hard to get a job in PR than in the states?

why does PR demand higher education and lots of qualifications for a poor pay?

  1. i would say english teacher.

there is a high demand for that over there because of it being

    mandatory in schools

  2. A degree in education with a concentration in teaching English as a second language is your best bet. Most Schools of Education also require that you have a second, sometimes third "teachable" subject. To increase your chances of obtaining work in PR I suggest that you include in your curriculum the teaching of Science/Mathematics. You must also be able to speak Spanish. There are several reasons why it is more difficult to work in PR than other states. First, PR is in the Caribbean and MANY people from the states would love to live and work there, thereby competing for limited jobs with the residents of PR. The government of PR is dedicated to hiring Puerto Ricans FIRST. Therefore, you must have skills that are lacking and needed in order to get a job. Even if you have a degree in education, can teach English, and speak Spanish, any available job will go to a PR citizen with the same or fewer qualifications. And that's as it should be. By adding the ability to teach a science or math as opposed to something like History or literature you increase your chances of being hired, as there is a greater need for Science teachers. Perhaps the link below will give you more information.

  3. None of those two options get a good pay in PR, the educational system in PR is going through some hard times, and its mostly related to poor pay. So if you want to study one of those options don't consider PR as part of your decision.

  4. If you have the skills that PR needs, it is not too hard to get a job. But if you want to be a waitress or work in tourism, there are lots of people vying for those jobs, so it is very hard to get a job unless you are VERY qualified.

Out of those 2 options Social worker or teacher, you have a better chance of getting a job as an English teacher. There is a lack of teachers here. But the pay is terrible.

What PR really needs is health care workers  (Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists  etc) and computer programmers.  But again, the pay is much less than in the States.

I guess we get paid less because we get to live in Puerto Rico and enjoy great weather all year!
