  1. Shimano have a range of derailers with deore being just above alvio. deore may be found on more expensive mountain bikes as it is shimano's enrty level mtb component however nothing that shimano make is rubbish. the only difference between them is that the deore is likely to last longer. Both will function pretty much the some, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Don't buy a bike just because it has the better derailer, it is likely you will spend more on a bike than you need to for what you do. If you are juct buying a new derailer for an existing bike, i would reccomend the alvio, cheaper and  functions nearly as good.

    hope this helps

  2. The Alivio is Shimano top of the line UTILITY group for use on almost any bike. Deore is their entry level MTB group. The Deore will be better.

  3. Deore is better. From Shimano:

The DEORE group delivers a high level of quality and performance you would expect in an upper level but a great value system. Whether it's a friendly race in the dirt, cruising along single track, or just riding around town, Shimano DEORE has got performance to match.

ALIVIO has a reputation for style, value and great performance. With a simple rugged design, an 8-speed drivetrain, and full compliment of advanced Shimano functions, ALIVIO adds up to a high-quality recreational mountain bike group.

  4. Simply put, the Deore line is a higher level than Alivio.  If you truly want performance, though, LX, XT, amd XTR, are the tops.  Minimally, go with LX.  I ride XT, and XTR is the top, but you really pay for it.  The price point jumps big between XT and XTR, while offering little advantage other then a few grams weight.
