Question:

Which digital bridge camera should I get?

Both my sons play a lot of sport, including surfing, and I find it impossible to get good photos with our otherwise fantastic IXUS. I'm looking to get something with a much bigger zoom, but have neither the time or the inclination for the complexities of an SLR. What camera should I buy?

  1. There only 2 good Digital Bridge Camera's out there

Sony DSC R1  ((10 MP))   (APS C  (cmos sensor) wide angle 24mm to 200mm Carl Zeiss lens (F2 to F2.8 , good aperture) )

Only problem might be a little too big at 930g

    and

    http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm...

Fujifilm FinePix S100FS   ((11 MP))   ( 2/3" CCD (much smaller than the R1, but still bigger than any other digital bridge Camera)  Wide angle lens (28 mm to a very high 400mm with Image stablisation) (F2.8 to F5.3)

    Again a big Camrea, 968g

Both offer excellent noise control at ISO 400+ (R1  ISO 800+) (due to large sensor) , hardly any other bridge  camera's can do this as most of them use 'aggressive noise reduction' even at ISO 100 noise is visiable.

You could consider a DSLR, because

all have a 'Auto mode' so that the camera sets everything automatically plus you have 'scence modes' cloudy, sports, etc., some are lighter, offer better quality photos, bigger sensors,  but you don't get much of a zoom on most (18-55m) and a kit lens you get are no where as good as the Bridge Camera lens

    Hope That Help

  5. Panasonic FZ18. An excellent camera. 18x optical zoom @ 8m megapixels, 23+ @ 5m, 28+ @3m,.. amazing, without a whopping great long lense hanging out the front. (+ 4x digital zoom.)  As good as you'll get. Best  image stabilization available, many different modes- fully automatic, to, fiddle with a 1001 settings if you wish, has sport mode. One of "which" reports "favourite cameras".  There isn't a perfect camera that suits every situation, this one might suit yours, look it up, FZ18 reviews.  Good luck, and happy snapping! :-)

  6. I don't know but I love my Sony CyberShot...

  7. A Sony Cybershot! Without a doubt a fantastic little camera. A lot of the time its the person who takes the quality shots...not the camera...you just need imagination.

  9. Get the Canon S5-IS.  You are already familiar with the menu system in Canon and this is a great camera.  There are bigger zooms out there by now, but there is also such a thing as simply too much.
