What is your price range?

Are you looking at point n shooter, or DSLR's?

Canon S5, and the new Nikon P80 are probably the best under $400, but they will not compare with a Nikon or Canon DSLR, which will start around $500+

A Nikon D60 with an 18-200 VR is a great combo,

around $1300

Getting a DSLR, super telephoto lens, and extender will give you the highest zoom.

Canon has an 800mm lens and a 2x extender.

If you can afford it, the EOS-1Ds Mark III will give you great quality.
