  1. I'd suggest the next little step up from the D40, the D40x. Both D40 siblings are great for people who are starting out, and especially for when those beginners are transitioning into more serious photography. You can do really nice work by customizing the settings and putting on a nice lens.

I would suggest the D40x over the D40 because it fixed a lot of the little problems with its predecessor. There isn't much of a difference in price now because the D40x has been replaced recently by the D60.  I would look on Amazon first, it's safe and  you can find some nice bargains. Also look at keh.com, the "photographer's marketplace".

  2. Your Canon FM10 is a Nikon

Look of a Nikon D40 with AF-S 18-55 mm ED lens for under $470 on Amazon or Costco

  3. Hi Silver!!  :)  Why not just choose for yourself?   Digital SLR's in your price range from the most reputable camera manufacturers are Nikon D40 and D60...  Canon Rebet XT and XTi.   With that information in hand,  go out to Best Buy or Circuit City... somewhere in your city that has them and has them on display so that you can handle each,  get the feel and look,  ask relative questions of the sales rep and see which one just grabs you.   Of course,  there will be other models there... and maybe one that you like better,  but the Nikons and Canons are sturdy, reliable and carry a good warranty.  Happy Camera Shopping. :))  Thanks for reading.

  4. NIKON Semi-pro Digital SLRs

  5. I would definitely recommend going with the Nikon D40. If you get the D40 from Amazon, it is only $450, with a 18-55mm lens (an excellent lens), and because it is so cheap, it would give you some extra cash to buy lenses, flashes, etc. See: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-18-5...

The D40 is a great camera. Go for it!

One thing about the D40 to keep in mind, is that if you are used to the second lcd screen on top, (for aperture, shutter speed settings, etc.) than not having it on the D40 could be quite annoying, if you are not used to using that screen, than I do not believe it would be a big problem not to have it.

Secondly, Some cameras (such as the Nikon D80) have a motor built in the camera, so it can auto-focus with any lens, where as the D40 does not have a motor inside it, so it is limited to Nikon AF-S and AF-I lenses. This should not be a big problem unless you already have some lenses (that are not AF-S or AF-I) that you want to auto-focus with the D40. If you do not, than stick to buying from Nikon's large collection of AF-S and AF-I lenses. Note that the Nikon D40 can still operate other lenses, just you will have to manual focus.

Any other questions, feel free to send me a message.
