  1. It depends on the airline you book your flight on, all Asian and American airlines fly west to Beijing. If you book through a European or Middle Eastern carrier you'll almost always fly through and have a layover in Europe or the Middle East. Flying west is the shortest and fastest way to go and usually much cheaper. I've flown to Asia over 50 times from the US, and every flight I've been on has flown west or northwest using a polar route.

  2. Our flight to Beijing was from SFO.  We flew north along the coast towards Alaska and then towards Beijing along the Russian coast.  It took 12 hours.  Out of NY you probably will fly northwest.

I checked Google for flights from JFK to Beijing and found some had connections in Hong Kong or San Francisco.  The non stop flights start at 16.5 hours and go to 20 hours depending on connections.

  3. The most direct route will look like this:

Your route may vary from this a little bit due to:

    1) weather

    2) other air traffic

    3) On a plane with only 2 engines, you will likely be required to stay within 3 hours' flying time of an airport big enough to accommodate your aircraft in case an emergency landing becomes necessary.

So I'd guess you might go slightly more West, to use Anchorage as a possible diversion point.

  4. WEST

  5. When you choose Cathay Pacific as your airline, you will probably take the North Pole Route the have a connection in HKG. The total flight time to HKG will be 15 hrs and 55 mins. Then the total flight time to PEK is 3hrs and 15 mins. =]

  6. Depends if you have a connecting flight somewhere else in the US. I'd say West.
