My Greek neighbor here in Athens says that Greeks prefer British English, instead of American English because it's more pure. But, my Greek-Canadian neighbor answered my Greek neighbor via email and said the reason was this. Sorry, but he wrote it in Greek so not sure exactly what it says if anyone can translate:

Sas katalaveno yiati protimate ta Agglika tis Agglias. Etsi einai sinithos. E proin apoikies apoktoun kai protimoun tin glossa kai profora ton proin afentikon ton.

  1. i understand why do you prefer British English, that's the way it goes usually (thats what most people do). The ex colonies have and prefer the language and the accent of their ex "bosses" ...

That's what he have told you

    hope i've helped

  2. Greeks hate anything American. So, British.

  3. I understand why you prefer British English. That's how things are usually. The ex- colonies adapt and prefer the language and accent of their ex-boses.

Personally I think Greeks prefer listening to the American accent.

I'm in university  studying English and most students prefer the teachers with the American accent. And I think that's natural since we are used in listening so much American english in the movies, in music, on TV series.

  4. 1) The translation the other users gave you is correct. What your friend says though is rubbish: Greece never was a colony.

    2) Personally I prefer British English because that's what I've been taught. But sometimes I catch myself using American expressions.

  5. Ralph l am very surprised that you the mighty Ralph who knows everything, it's simply not possible not to know the answer!!! I am afraid you are terribly wrong dear.  American English are far more easier than English from UK and Greek students are more likely to pass the Proficiency of Michigan than of UK, but it does not matter, l understand your question .... very very well! And by the way you have many similarities with another user....*Tellme*, you friend..your friend's friend....etc! Well why don't you ask your friend - neighbour whatever to translate it!!!

  6. I am from USA, and so I speak American English....but when my cousin was taking English lessons (from a British teacher), my aunt explained to me that cousin Elsa was learning the "good" English.....

  7. Ralph only gives answers and questions to wind people up! And he succeeds at every turn - I think he knows perfectly well what the Greek says AND has been living in Greece many years ..... AND knows how to irritate the locals!!!

Humo(u)r him guys ..... he's lonely and we're his only friends!!!

  8. Firstly the Greeks do not speak neither with a "Manchester" accent nor with an accent from New York.

Usually we mix the American and the British English, and many times we use American expressions because are more familiar due to the American cinema.

English is not our mother-language so we don't think what type of English we will use.

    The most important....

If you had studied in a school (but i guess u do not even know what the word means) you would know that Greece was never a British Colony.

What's this....the new book of History lesson in the FYROM ?

I guess in this book FYROMians also writing that the pyramids were made by China and that Napoleon Bonaparte was a leader of Argentina.
