Which do I take first the 5 hour class or the lessons?

I am trying to get my drivers license.

How would you take the lessons if you do not know what the signs mean and what to do in certain situations even with an instructor next to you.  Take the class first then go into the street not the other way around that would not make any sense.  Are you in a school or is someone just teaching you because if it is a school they really do not know what they are doing.  Good luck anyways on your test when you decide to take it.
