economics, you can make money in good times and bad

Econ...if political trends change(and they ALWAYS do!) within government, you can always get a job as an accountant, math teacher etc. and work in the private sector as a trouble-shooter. Public policy jobs usually depend upon government funding.

having a phd in anything is a lifelong ambition so either one is equal.

economics ... a wider range of jobs become available when you have this degree .

Economics. But getting a PhD in anything is pretty hard. So it's like, equal. But you get more money in economics. Usually.

I think a Ph.D. in chemistry and physics would be worth a h**l of a lot more. Especially now that the science of alternative energy is becoming so important.

Economics, my mom almost got one and she's been quite successful with the education she has right now, but I bet she could have done better if she had finished it! Good luck.
