  1. A Ph.D. in economics will get you far more job opportunities at a much higher salary and will garner MUCH MORE respect than a sociology degree.  Corporations of all kinds, financial agencies, governments .. these are just some of the organizations that need people who understand economics, allocation and flow of assets and resources, the conditions and events that impact assets and resources.  There's a lot more to economics than just "supply and demand."

Sociology is interesting in an abstract kind of way.  It isn't considered a particularly difficult field of study.  It's more about defining ever more groups to categorize people into or labels to stick them with, and then determining behavior according to label.  To quote on of my favorite characters from fiction - "If you want to control and manipulate a group of people, you need a sociologist."

Economics has more value to society in the long run.  Be sure your education includes a lot of history, because you need to understand how economics influenced the events of a particular era just as much as you need to understand the theory behind economics.

  2. College football players often major in sociology because it is pretty hard to flunk out,

  3. There's usually much better money to be made in Economics.

  4. I think sociology cos it'll open up a more diverse field for woteva job u plan 2 work in, in the future. + i wud find economics a tad too borring

  5. Econ is way more respected than sociology. People will be impressed if you have a Phd regardless of what subject you studied. Go for Econ if you want the WOW factor, but sociology if you want to study something way more interesting!
