  1. Geldings are def quieter and easyier to handle and have a little less personality , mares generally show more intelligence which can make them a little more difficult to handle...also they spend half the summer in season...our mare try,s to stand for cars in the peak of her season.........

  2. I like them both but I like the ride of a gelding better.  Easier to train and handle and you never have to deal with them coming into heat.  However I like the attitude on the ground of mares a little better.  Geldings often act too quirky in a herd.

  3. i like mares they just have that extra bitta zip to them haha

but if u just want a horse you won't have to repremand sometimes then get a gelding

  4. Gelding, for sure.

They are generally much more placid and gentle.

Mares get grouchy when they are on heat, grouchy when they start to get older, and are just generally grouchy.

wheras i find geldings tend to become more quiet and gentle the older they get

  5. GELDINGS!!

i've only had 1 mare out of my 5 horses I've had in my lifetime. and out of the many many horses i've ridden, only 2 mares have been somewhat nice in tempermant. They go through heat. Sadly during that time, they can go psycho, dont get me wrong they aren't all like that, but ALOT are, you might not be able to ride her during heat, they tend to get antsy and nasty, they will be all over the boys in the barn. Geldings can have their attitudes but they are for the most part level headed and have FANTASTIC personalities!! i would definitly recommend a gelding!!! they are great in any sport and theirs no heat not deal with!!! go with a gelding theyre just the best! plus all mares tend to have sort of the same personality, all geldings have a different personality

    =]

  6. I prefer gelding. All the mares I have known have gotten moody when they are in heat, and can be more irritable to ride and work with during that time. There are a few mares I have heard of that don't get moody and irritable, but I still prefer geldings. They seem overall more calm and mellow to me.

  7. I have ridden both but own a gelding and I have found that the mares can get in their moods but they are well worth it and very sweet when worked with enough, and geldings are pretty much like that all the time...it all dpends on the horse though you can't judge from statistics or bad past experiences...because I got bucked off a gelding before:]

so just find a horse that you think is suitable for you mare or gelding and if you put time into the horse you get(no matter the s*x) they will turn out the way you want!

    good luck!!

  8. i like mares best, but geldings are so much calmer. Stallions are just wild. My next horse is going to be a mare, unless i find a gelding or stallion that just clicks. so, yes, geldings are much calmer and `less bucky` *-*

  9. it would make you a lezbo to ride a girl so get a guy

  10. Guy the girls are scary sometimes they dont listen and a lotof other major probs

  11. Geldings because they never grow up and are easier to train and my guy who was not broken (ridden) has never bucked other than out in the pastures!

  12. Lets put it this way would you be calmer if you had your 'manhood' chopped off at a young age so you never knew what you were made for other than to work... Or... would you be more agree-able if you were PMSing?

    I'm all for geldings.

    exuse the crudeness

  13. I have always delt with this problem. I have a mare and a gelding and both are great but geldings are definately more docile and gentle. Geldings also are stronger and listen better. Mares on the other hand get a little crazy from their "girl hormones" and tend to get hot tempered at times. Also they go into heat a lot which is a pain to deal with. What are you wanting to do with this horse? Hoped this helped :)

  14. If you have no plans of breeding, then I would go with a gelding.  Why?  Because they are even tempered.  A mare can be finicky etc on certain days.

  15. First or last horse, a nice gelding does not have the hormonal issues and is the "same" horse every day.  There's a lot to be said about a nice gelding.

When the market was different, you could buy a NICE, well bred mare and upon retirement, she could produce a foal by a carefully selected, quality stallion and pay for her retirement and then some.  It just isn't that way anymore.

But I do have 3 mares, two are total cupcakes who seem to not get the "bitchy mare" behavior.  The other has her days.

  16. theyre right.

mares have temper tantrums and geldings are calm and quiet.

go with a gelding for your first horse

    :)

  17. geldings :]

they dont throw fits when you ride them, theyre laid back, they dont go in heat every spring, they dont give you attitude.

:DD i have two geldings and i love them to pieces

  18. every mare i have been around has always been gentle. I prefer mares simply because they tend to be sweeter. I am biased as all the geldings i have ever ridden have bucked me off, not responded to me while riding or have been easily spooked.

  19. I like geldings for there easier to deal with and laid back.  But from a business stand point I only buy mares or stallions because they can make money in breeding.  Like when I went to school I bred my mare when she was not in use.  But if you are not interested in that geldings are better.

  20. I have had both.  I have a gelding that is 14 he is a good horse, had since was 4.  I got a mare when she was a yearling and she is an awesome trail horse, she is now 9.  Started her on the trail when she was 4ish and she was awesome, very calm. I have 2 year old mare, and I got her when she was 6 months.  She is very sweet, not really spooky and very confident.  I pony her on the trail and she is awesome.  I have done alot of ground work with her first.  I love them all, but I think the mares are more gentle and smarter.  Since I have never bought a mare that I didn't get when they are young, I didn't have to deal with somebody else's issues.  My gelding is more herd bound then my mares.  What ever gender you get I just think you have to develop a bond with them built on trust and respect and you will a partner for life.

  21. females are better see males have testosterone making them more buckey.

  22. I like gelding more.

they tend to bond easier and are easier to control plus they dont come into season/

  23. my grandpa always said males horses are tamer.

  24. in my experience.. geldings are more calm and collected. mares, just like all girls!, getting moody and can be a handful. get a guy. i had 2 mares, how don't get me wrong, i love to death! but then i got a gelding and he is just a doll!! he is very calm on the trail and just a great all around horse. i put inexperinced riders on him without a second thought. either way, if this is your first horse, a well trained horse, gelding or mare, should be good if they were trained correctly. hope i helped! good luck with your new horse!!

  25. I read all of the other answers. ildbug, charrito cantador, mariah v, and cnsdubbie were the only ones you should be looking at. The others said between a 1 or 2 and everthing that wasn't true. The ones listed above were the only ones that I didn't find anything to disagree about. The bottom line is that it doesn't matter and that you should choose a horse for your level of riding experience. Once you reach a certain level, then it doens't matter what horse you choose, but you need to able to determine realistically whether or not you can provide everything that horse needs from care to training and leadership. My uncle owns the grandson of the Black Stallion Cass Ole. He is more docile than some geldings and mares that I know. The problem with stallions is that you can't turn them out with other horses, or at least you shouldn't. That presents it's own type of problems. You shouldn't get a stallion unless you have or can get the competance to breed and you plan to breed and have the means of supporting that endevour. Not all mares are a problem. While I admit that some mares are bitchy at times not all of them are. My uncle also has a black and white tobiano paint. She is the one that I ride at his mountain place. She is the sweetest horse that I've ever met and has never given me any problems beyond trying to graze ridding down the trail and not liking horses behind her. I started riding her in the mountains when she was four and I can't say that I would trust another horse to do that. She's never bucked, ever, except when let out in the pasture after being cooped up. Never once, even in training, with a rider on her back. I'm lucky. My uncle plans to give me her first baby out of her and his black arabian stallion. My family is currently overstocked on geldings. We have four that belong to our family of four. One is a palomino quater horse that is a kids horse. One is an old arabian with feet problems that's now a pasture decoration. One is my mom's first child, a tennesse walker who's probably going to be a pasture decoration, another is my mom's new favorite child, a spoiled bay arabian. We also acquired a sorrel quater horse that is supposed to be my cousins, but they haven't looked at him in a couple of years unless they're forced to. We were recently given two more geldings. A darker sorrel quarter horse and my new baby a 12 yr old sorrel and white paint quarter horse. So as you can see I have had experience with all three sexes and can tell you that one isn't any better than the other, just different and that each horse has a different personality. Geldings are pretty constant. They aren't different from ride to ride. Mares can be bitchy, but not neccesarily and I believe that they are more sensitive to touch. Stallions can be okay, but aren't recommended unless you have an exceptional horse you plan to breed. And no horse should be purchased unless they have brains, good conformation, and looks. Else, they are a waste of time and space. You only have one life to live and it's too short to waste on a horse that you want to improve. If you get a horse that you want to try to bring up and fix all of his problems then tell me what happens to the excellent horse that doens't get bought since you bought the fix-er-upper and goes to waste in the paster. Good luck on your choice.

  26. I personally like gelding better because they are gentler, they tend to have more of a personality, and they are more willing in my opinion. My first horse was a mare, and I still have her and luv her. Mares tend to have mood swings and get bitchy, and have lots of attitude.

  27. I would have to say that geting a gelding is best because they aren't interested much in the mares. mares will become very dominate and try to get tehir own  way alot.

My horse riding pal, her mum said never trust a chestnut, thoroughbred or a mare.

  28. I think I prefer mares.  I think they give you more, they try harder.  I don't have a problem with mine changing due to hormones.  In fact I can never even tell when the one is in heat because she never displays any signs of it.  The other displays signs toward the other horses but is still great when worked with/ridden.

I feel like my gelding is a bit boring.  He just doesn't seem to care to want to try very hard.  He does well, he's been pretty easy to train, but he just doesn't have that same heart that I find my mares have.  I feel like they really step it up a notch when we are in a tough situation or trying to learn something new.

  29. I personally prefer mares. Yes they can have their days, but I click with them and find once a bond is established they'll give you everything they've got. They tend to have more personality then geldings and I find them much more fun to have around. Yes, I have had geldings that have personality, but many of them I considered extremely boring. Geldings are more even tempered in general, but not always. There are some great mares out there. I wouldn't set your heart on any particular gender. Try them all out and see. Find the horse you like no matter what their gender. Good luck.

  30. it is not a matter of gender that makes a good horse. I have had stallions that are so sweet and easy going that you couldn't even tell he was a stallion. I have had stallions and geldings that are real jerks, but I have also had mares that have had a little bit of both. it does not really matter what gender you get as long as it is something for your rididng level. you can find some information and articles on horses at http://tonyonehorse.weebly.com
