Which do you prefer: Sun or Ascendant?

Question

In the Ancient times your Ascendant Sign was seen as the more prominent aspect of your personality. I hold that same belief, as the Ascendant Sign is the Sign of the Self through my eyes, and it also rules the First House or House of the Self.

In todays Western Society, many people place their focus on the Sun as your core. I believe this may be why people look at Astrology as fake/phony. Does anyone else agree? What are your thoughts/opinions?

For me, it may actually be the Moon. My Sun and Ascendant are both Aquarius. How I come off at first is resolved by my Sun and people either accept me or just don't get me. My Moon is in Scorpio and I admire anyone who can really get past my intensity to appreciate the Aquarian side. Then  I really know who my friends are.

i would pick ascendant. your ascendant is how you are with other people. it is how you tend to act during a first impression. it is how you want yourself to appear as. i guess in ancient times, people appreciated the way you look on the outside more than the way you are inside.

the sun sign reflects more of your inner qualities. these days, people focus more on your sun sign because we value innerselves more than our anscestors.

i agree, slightly. my sun sign is sagittarius and my rising is scorpio. i have noticed that i am more of a scorpio when i talk and meet new people. yet, i think more like a sag. and act more like a sag with my closest friends and family. i tend to get mad easily yet in five minutes i forget about it (sag trait). yet i have noticed that my emotions run with both. i can be very sensitive and if i get offended ill probably tell you, sometimes i even can get jealous  (both sag and scorpio) . yet, if someone hurts me and im tired of it i move on easily (sag) . i loveeee knowing more information about things i dont get at ALL (sag & scorp).    sometimes people call me blunt when just meeting me, and then when im with my friends we are always laughing (scorps come off unemotional) . and i am extremely observant. i notice things my friends never pick up (scorpio) .. so i would have to say that my traits are deff mixed between the two signs. lol hope i didnt confuse you. its one in the morning here and im half asleep rambling on the compouter (:

i would say the sun is a good core/base (a simple base), and from there you go to the ascendant and moon (very, very important too)

as well as very tight planetary aspects

and then venus and mars

Hi Micky

The Ascendant is how people see you or how you choose them to see you. It is like a mask where you don't always show the true self but rather express yourself via the rising sign. This colors your Sun sign.

Sun is your Ego, your individualty whereas the Moon is your personality. As for fake or phonies and what not, their are qwacks in the medical profession just like in Astrology. Because some cannot predict or do not have intuition or awareness as to birth chart interpretation, it doesn't put us all in the same bag.

Finally, the Sun expresses its trait thorugh the Ascendant or should I say, it is colored with the rising sign. If you were a fire sign like Aries, Sagittarius or Leo, the fire would be toned down with an earth sign rising just like earth puts out fire.

With a water sign, the emotions would be more than just intense. With air, their would be more compatibility psychologically and less internal conflict because of the compatibility of these two elements.

i have cancer rising and most times i act like my rising sign.  My sun sign is aquarius and i wish that would come out more, but i guess since my moon has many aspects and it's the ruler of my ascendant that's probably why I feel more like my cancer rising sign.  Mostly only my close friends see my aquarius side or like the first person said...if I'm in a really good mood!

To answer your question about why people see astrology as fake because of the focus on sun signs I will agree with you there because our world is so busy now a days that people hardly take the time to truly get to know people (heck some people hardly have time to know their selves) and we mostly see the -mask- or ascendant instead of the sun sign so people might see astrology as fake due to that reason in my eyes.

I think your Ascendant is how people perceive you and how you act towards people.

I could honestly care less about what others think of me...so I tend to think of the Sun more than the Ascendant, but I understand they are both equally important in a chart...

Indian Lagna is not the same as western Ascendant.They are different.

I personally find western astrology to be less reliable than Vedic astrology.

I have Sagittarius sun and Aquarius rising.Both are similar in many ways.Sagittarius and Aquarius have unique ways of understanding things.Both are creative and smart.They are detached and often maintain distance from family.Both are somewhat weird.So its all the same to me.Doesn't make any difference.

Also I don't believe that ascendant is just a mask and Sun is the core.I have seen many personalities who are neither their sun nor the ascendant. Its not that simple to say ascendant is just a mask.

Interesting...I choose both.

Sun is Leo,best leader and a fire sign.

Rising is Aquarius,air sign and very sociable,so it's kinda hard.

Both of them represent me,and I can't really live without one o.O

I think an ascendant is good for your first impression of a person, while a sun sign is better to judge their core.

It also depends on the day. An example is I have a cancer rising and a leo sun, and I tend to act like a cancer on my bad days and a leo on my good. My rising is my first impression, and I'm less likely to let you see my core on my bad day, therefore I act more like a cancer.

Actually, I find that this sometimes hurts me.  My rising is Aquarius, so I come off as blunt, unfeeling, friendly, talkative, outgoing, and detached. People tend to think I am a lot less sensitive than my Cancer Sun is.  It can cause issues for me at times.  Meanwhile, there is a friend of mine who is Aquarius sun and Cancer rising who comes off as caring, gentle, sincere, emotional, etc, and then the Aquarius detachment and coolness sets in and I'm left wondering what happened.  It can be very confusing....kind of like a false representation of who you really are at your core. It's misleading in some cases.
