Which downloadable software is best for editing a movie?

I have some video clips that I made at school with my (photo) camera and now I'd like to edit them into a short movie for a competition. I have no software to do it with though. I've been thinking of downloading Windows Movie Maker, but I'd like to hear some other opinions and options - which free and safe downloadable software would you recommend for this purpose?

It depends on if you have a pc or Mac. I have a PC and I use a program called Vegas. I dont think it's free... But it's definetely much better than anything you'll get for free. It's simple to use yet can do a lot of advanced things.
