Hello. I know the following scenario is remote possibility but I really want to hear u guys' insights.

On the 3-lane highway, there is a car driving on the far left lane and there is a car driving on the far right lane. The middle lane is empty. Both drivers make a lane change to the middle at the exact same time and accident happens. Which driver is at fault?

What should you do as a driver to prevent things like that from happening?

Thanks for insights.

  1. its really not that difficult...they are both at fault. neither of them actually looked to realize the other was coming over. unless on person starts to move into the middle lane and the other person rams into them from the other side lol where it would be obvious to who was at fault. just always double check with your mirrors and your eyes to make sure there isnt any potential danger. maybe one of the people pulling into the middle lane could have slowed down a little and waited until there were no cars parallel to them in either lane.

  2. Both. If you want to change lanes, you should signal, the fact that you didn't mention this means that neither of them signalled. Theycould have easily seen that someone else was going to the same part, and would change their minds

  3. it all depends on where the cars struck each other the car that hit the furthest section in the rear is at fault but both people should have singled and made sure nothing was in the way this is just bad driving on both parties if I was riding my motorcycle I would not want either one of them near me they are the people who kill us all the time.

  4. Both are at fault for looking looking before changing lanes.

Always double check before changing lanes..

  5. depending on which driver was more visible/  ahead of the other driver would determine who's more at fault but the rules of the road are that the driver in the left lane has the right of way and should be passing traffic in the center lane.  If a driver in the right lane goes to the center he should yield to traffic in the left lane also.  To prevent this in either case,  I use my mirrors, signal, and don't drive into other vehicles to avoid an accident.  I know what is around my vehicle at all times or pull over, brake, to find out before I manuever somewhere I can't see where I'm driving into.  It's no different than asking if two cars crash behind/in front of each other and who's at fault.
