  1. First of all, Ice Ages are cyclic, they occur appx. every 20,000 years or so...

The last major one ended about 10,000 years ago. It's the earth's way of heating up and cooling down, like the radiator in you car..

We're not scheduled for another one for maybe 8-10,000 years, but with this "Greenhouse" momentum building up, h**l, we could have one starting next week...

Also, Ice Ages usually last between 1-2,000 years...

Back to your question...Cro-Magnon (Equivalent to Modern Homo sapiens, like us) left Europe 10,000 years ago. Most likely they headed south, due to the cold..

The last Neanderthal bones found, are dated to appx. 25,000 BP, so they were long gone before the Ice Age even started (which was appx.12,500 years BP)...

As for the most recent Homo erectus remains, found in Java, which were carbon-dated to 27,000 years BP, that is very close to the Equator, so even if they survived to 12,500 BP, they would not have experienced an Ice Age per se', as glaciers in Ice Ages, usually don't encroach past 30 degrees North or South latitudes...

  2. Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon.  The others you mention all existed LONG before the last Ice Age, like a million years or more before.

  3. Neandertal, Sapien (Cro-Magnon was just Sapien) & Homo Erectus.  Recent discoveries indicate Homo Erectus died out only 20,000 yrs ago in East Asia.  They seem to have outlived Homo neandertal which had evolved from Erectus as Sapien did.

Peternal: your Ice age dates are slightly skewd, as the Glacial Maximum was ~ 20,000 yrs ago & the ice age lasted ~ 20,000 years.  30,000 to 10,000 yrs ago would be a fair approximate estimate for the last ice age.  Neandertal had evolved into a carnivoir where both Erectus & Sapien were omnivoirs that could subsist on a wide variety of foods. Erectus appears to have survived well into the ice age.

Many Erectus fossiles have been found in high lattitudes & the lack of fossiles in an area dating deep into the ice age does not indicate they had totally abandoned that area.

Edit:  The problem with Homo erectus is that below the neck, they are virtually identical to Homo sapien... causing a great deal of contraversy over how to classify a fossil, unless a significant part of the skull is found.  Later erectus had a brain size only slightly below that of ancient sapien... causing an ongoing arguement between regional & out of Africa evolutionists.

  4. I think you asking the question wrong.  The Neanderthal was the one that was most adapted for the ice ages and lived in Europe which was the area most effected by the ice ages.  Cro-magnon is just a name for early European cave dwellers. They made their way into Europe before the end of the last ice age.  I think the one most associated with the ice ages would be the Neanderthal.  Some people don't think of the Neanderthal as human, maybe that's the problem.
