Ted Kennedy Dumps Fuel into Nantucket Sound

Ted Kennedy has called Nantucket Sound near his Massachusetts estate “a national treasure” — but that didn’t stop the senator from having oil dumped from his yacht into its waters.

A local photographer spotted an oil slick coming from Kennedy’s yacht Mya as Kennedy and his guests left the vessel in a launch following a race that ended in Hyannis, the Cape Cod Today newspaper reported.

The lensman was so shocked that he rowed his dinghy out to question the crew member left aboard the yacht.

He asked the crewman, “What the h**l are you doing?”

The crewman said that diesel fuel had gotten into the bilge and he was told to dump it.

When the photographer pointed out that the yacht was moored in coastal waters near shellfish beds and people swimming, the crewman replied, “Whatever.”

Cape Cod Today published a photo showing the oil slick emanating from Mya.

As Newsmax reported earlier, Kennedy has opposed a proposal to construct a wind farm in Nantucket Sound to produce cheap, clean energy. Asked why, he said: “That’s where I sail.”

  2. Difficult to answer. If you are asking about totals, then Coal wins by far. Cars and trucks of all type fuels only produce 9-10% of man made CO2. Electric power plants produce about 25% and the majority of that power is from coal.

If you are asking for a specific amount of energy burned comparison, then my understanding is that Gasoline produces slightly more than diesel and jet fuel. Very little "Oil" is burned directly anymore.

Hydrogen depends on how it is produced. If from coal plant electric power, then it may be just as bad as coal or gas.

  3. CO2 is not a pollutant as the plants need it to live and if the plants die ,we also die.

  4. Don't forget about

    Humans

    Animals

    Volcano's

    Forest fires

    They all spue out CO2

So it you add that to the list I pick Volcano's

When Mt. St. Helen erupted it kicked out more CO2 then all of man kinds contraptions thought out history.

  5. coal, which is nearly all Carbon, emits more CO2 than all the others, which are all hydrocarbons, which produces a minimum of 2 H2O molecules for Each CO2 molecule, but since Hydrogen is of low atomic weight, Coal produces only 17% more CO2 than Oil products.

    Hydrogen produces only water.

  6. Coal by a big margin

  7. normal car polution

  8. I'm sure that, under given circumstances you could create a controlled experiment that would give comparative results.

But it actually depends on a number of factors.

If exhaust contains unburned material (and there is always some), it adds to the detrimental nature of the emmissions. If it is efficiently burned and then the carbon squestered in some way - it can be relatively low in detrimental emmissions.

Hydrogen lives very close to the line between an energy source and an energy storage and release system. It is a fine line, but there is not enough hydrogen in raw form to consider it a primary energy resource. You can't mine, grow or drill for hydrogen. You use energy to produce it so you can transport that potential energy to a place where you wish to release it as kinetic energy such as the motor of your vehicle. It is only as clean as the means to manufacture it.

  9. The others have talked about CO2, so I will address "other pollutants". When it comes to the generation of NOx, CO, particulate matter, and other pollutants, the amount generated varies widely not only depending on the fuel type but also on the way it is burned and in what equipment. EPA has developed guidelines to estimate emissions from lots of different sources that can be found here:
