  1. I like your question though I think it is very big. It is difficult to say, particularly in such a regulated society where it is almost impossible to get away with anything without somebody complaining or on a larger scale corruption charges being brought against the company. On a customer level, smaller is personally a little better than corporate giant companies, though in general, Britain is far behind many countries on standard of service. It´s usually pretty awful.

I don`t think it is quite so black and white as to say a company is really bad as opposed to a another with is really good. For example, if you worked for Sainsbury´s head office, the atmosphere is very friendly, people get on well together and there is quite a lot of scope to be expressive in your job. You don´t get paid quite so well and the annual pay rises are very government like but on a personal level, it can be quite attractive. At Tesco however, it's a little more cut throat and if you want to excel, you need to work very hard and try to make yourself look better than your colleagues. I dare say they get on as co.-workers but the pay is the highest in its sector and people are generally more cut throat if they think they can get a much better pay packet. And for some, that is the kind of environment they want to work in. For others, not. As a supermarket they both generally impersonal but you get all that you are looking to buy in one place. There is little difference. In the small cornershop however, you can pretty quickly be on first name terms with owner.

As for other industries, banks are a much of a muchness. They are all very geared towards making a lot of money and that usually produces arrogance, one upmanship, etc. Lawyers, I have no idea.

Well I like your question but it is so all encompassing, I could write for ages, but I don't want to bore you.

  2. SAFEWAY  (grocery store chain)--

They are way overpriced for grocery products. You can get the same quality of items and service at many other places at much cheaper prices.

For potential and existing employees it is a rotten place to have a carreer..Of course they pretend to be a great place to work for young graduate students and do it deceivingly well. They pay the employees a higher wage to start with good benefits and promisses. But after a few years they act like a two-faced dictatorship company especially when you go up the union pay scale. They intend to manipulate and DO take control of your life. I spent many years there (28) and I am glad I finally made the escape to a much more satisfying carreer for me and the happiness of my family.

Now when I look back, I regret wasting all the precious time and years that I put up with that company's c**p and would advise anyone or anyone you know  who is still there to get out and devote your hard working efforts and years to a company that truly appreciates you and doesn't just use people.for the store's proffits and for the company executives and CEO'S rediculously high pay and bonusses.

I started there at a young age of 18 and they promissed  me everything to stay. I eventually had a family to support.  I worked very hard for years and made good money for me and my family. But my attitude suffered after many manipuative dissapointments and my health took it's toll while they sucked the life out of me.

I thought I had to stay and felt trapped mainly for financial reasons for numerous years. The more I aged the worse it got. I was scared to explore for a better place.

I am so happy now that finally I left, I found a great job and I am a different person inside, to my family (most important) and to everyone around me. My attitude and my health has even improved substantially. I found out myself that It's never too late to change jobs.

The ironic thing is, that I was warned about all this by my senior employees when I just started at Safeway and I told them I didn't know what they were talking about and brushed off their comments, well now I know, the hard way. I should have listened to them and taken them seriously. That's why I am writing all this, to save somone else. Take ME seriously.

The sad thing is I will have to take these regets, and bad memories of wasted years at Safeway with me to my grave as you can tell!

Bottom line to anyone is; don't take any job just for the money benefits and promisses, take a job where you know you will be happy for many years because you might just get stuck there like I did..

    Good luck!

    Anonomously Happy
