Question:

Which first grade level curriculum?

The options are overwhelming! I'm looking for a curriculum in a box for first grade level work. (I'm to scattered to be able to make sure I covered everything...plus, this is all new to me!) So, which curriculums did you guys use to cover all subjects in first grade.

On a side note: We already have Saxon Math 1, and it looks good. So, math can stand alone.

  1. Have you looked at Sonlight? We have tried another curriculum and came back to Sonlight by the end of the first semister. They have lesson plans already set up for you when you order it, you also get access to their forums so you can reach other Sonlight parents and get answers for any question. It is a bit pricy but if you have more than one child to teach it becomes an investment.

  2. Try this web site for curriculum review.

Also Cathy Duffy has a book out called -

100 top picks for homeschool curriculum :

You should be able to find it at your local library, or buy it at any book store

I used several different ones before I found a great fit!!

    Best of Luck!!!

  4. It is overwhelming!

This website has good reviews of different curriculums: http://www.homefires.com/gateway/

  5. We've used K12 for over 5 years.  It's fantastic.

We use it as independent HS'ers, not as part of a virtual academy.  My son started it at age 5 with a Kdg-1st-2nd grade mix of grade levels.

FWIW, Saxon does not meet my son's learning style, or math ability.  You first need to find your child's learning style, then choose a curriculum based on that (and your learning/teaching style).

  6. We use Sonlight and we really like it.  It's a bit more expensive but all of the legwork is done for you.  The schedules are also done for you.  It's a really good curriculum if you are a family of literature lovers, like us.  For our first year, we handpicked our curriculum.  It was alright, but it was not enough for my kids.  We used Saxon in first grade.  It was okay but by the end of the year my first grader found it tedious and repetitive.  It didn't advance quickly enough.  For example, they count pennies for half the year and then add nickels for the second half of the year.  Most kids don't need to repeat that, every day, once they've got it.  So we just kept adding coins until he could count loonies, toonies (we're Canadian), quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies up to any amount.  Here's a link to Sonlight:

I highly recommend it.  You can teach various ages at once and then tailor the L.A. and Math to fit each one.  All the best.

  7. We currently use A Beka 1. My son has really responded to A Beka. We used their K-5 program also.
