for that one, i would say chicken, because all the little cells in the ocean eventually evolved into something, not spontaniously hatched from a magic egg.

the same theory applies to the 'apple/apple tree' question, but with plant life.

tree of apple, because when bacteria evovled into photosynthetic bacteria (i.e. ones which photosynthesize), and then evovled again into plants, the mechanism for producing fruit had not come yet. then, after millions of years of evolving, the first fruit trees starting producing fruit with seeds, and then they split intomany varieties, one of which became the apple.

so, for say a fig or summin like that tree was 'born,'but it was different to its parents as it produced apples, so it was the apple tree which came first.

In this case I would say the apple tree, although really the apple seeds came first.
