  1. Each has advantages and disadvantages.

Good pellets are better nutritionally, as everything needed is in there.  For horses that choke or have bad teeth, they're definitely better.  You can even get soft pellets that dissolve in the mouth for the aged ones with no teeth.  You can get pellets with all the roughage needed in them, so you don't HAVE to feed hay if you select a "Complete" feed.

In winter, they don't freeze into a solid lump of frozen molasses that's hard to scoop.  In the summer, they don't ferment.

The disadvantages to pellets include:  most horses prefer sweet feed; you can't tell by looking whether the pellets are good quality or not.  It can be hard to tell if the pellets are old or reasonably new.

Most horses prefer sweetfeed (which I assume is what you mean by muesli) for palatability.  You can assess easily if it's reasonably good quality by looking at the grains in it.  You can tell when it's too old or has been mishandled by looking at it and smelling it.

It's harder to make it nutritionally complete, though many manufacturers now add pellets to it.

Some horses tend to get hyper on the sugar; the molasses is empty calories that don't provide nutrition.

It smells great, feels good, and I just like feeding it

Other mixed grain feeds without molasses are available but difficult to find here.  The advantage is you can tell without reading the small print on the labels what's in there.  You aren't feeding a lot of unnatural stuff you don't know about, like soy or beet pulp or byproducts.

The disadvantage is that your horse may not be getting all the nutrients needed in your particular area.

What should you feed?  To a large extent, it's personal preference.  Just make sure you use a feed that's been specifically made for your areas, so any missing minerals have been supplied.

  2. Personally I make my own feed up.

    1/3 crushed oats

    1/3 boiled barley

    1/3 kibbled maize

That my base, then I add peas, linseed and mineral mix.

  3. Depends on their teeth, pellets are better for older horses because of their teeth.  They can digest it better, because it is already ground up in a pellet form
