  1. *{Forbidden to you (for food) are dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which has been invoked the name of other than Allah; that which has been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety...}* (Al-Ma'ida 5:3)

    God very clearly mentioned in the Quran what is prohibited from the food and meat. See 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and16:115. From these verses you can know what is Halal (lawful) meat and what is haram (prohibited).

    "He only prohibits for you the eating of animals that die

    of themselves (without human interference), blood, the

    meat of pigs, and animals dedicated to other than GOD. If

    one is forced (to eat these), without being malicious or

    deliberate, he incurs no sin. GOD is Forgiver, Most

    Merciful." 2:173

    "Halal Meat" as we know it these days, is a term used more often for commercial profits than religious observance. Those who call their meat Halal, are in some way insinuating that any other meat is not Halal, or specifically the meat in the general grocery stores is not Halal. They make more money on their products by selling it more expensive while deceiving the naive public Moslems into believing that their meat is the only Halal meat for the Muslims.

    You do not need to guess hard to understand the MERCY of the MOST merciful. God Almighty knows many Muslims will live in the middle of Christians and Jews and will be sharing their food and for this reason God told the Prophet Muhammed more than 1400 years ago, the following;

    "Today, all good food is made lawful for you. The food of the people of the scripture (Jews & Christians) is LAWFUL (HALAL) for you......" 5:5

    These verses were revealed at a time when God already told us that the people of the scripture distorted their books and no-one can claim this verse was meant for the early Jews and Christians. God Almighty has also specified a very important criteria for His true believers, MENTION GOD"S NAME on everything you are going to eat. See 5:4, & 6:118-119,

    "You shall eat from that upon which God's name has been pronounced, if you truly believe in His revelation." 6:118

  2. *  Meat from swine..pork, ham, gammon, bacon, etc

        * Pork-based products and by-products..sausages, gelatine etc

    Halal and haram foods in the quran and hadith

    He hath forbidden you only carrion, and blood, and swineflesh, and that which hath been immolated to (the name of) any other than Allah. But he who is driven by necessity, neither craving nor transgressing, it is no sin for him. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful” (2:173).

    “Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swine-flesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been killed by (the goring of) horns, and the devoured of wild beasts, saving that which ye make lawful (by the death-stroke), and that which hath been immolated unto idols.''(5:3)

    “..... And those beasts and birds of prey which ye have trained as hounds are trained, ye teach them that which Allah taught you; so eat of that which they catch for you and mention Allah's name upon it, and observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is swift to take account” (5:4)

    “And eat not of that whereon Allah's name hath not been mentioned, for lo! it is abomination. .............” (6:121).

    ''O believers, wine, gambling, (ungodly) shrines and divining devices are all abominable works of Satan; therefore refrain from these so that you may attain true success....(5:90)

    Narrated Abu Thalaba: Allah’s Messenger forbade the eating of the meat of beasts having fangs (Bukhari).

    Narrated Ibn Umar: The Prophet cursed the one who did Muthla to an animal (i.e. cut its limbs or some other part of its body while it is still alive (Bukhari).

  3. As far as I know, neither crabs nor rabbit meat is haram. Perhaps your brother-in-law just avoids those because of  personal preferences?

  4. Because Prophtet Moses people had many restrictions and so when Allah sent Prophet Muhammad he addressed the whole of mankind.

  5. As per Quran Alone:

    The main verses for the halal and haram food are:  6:145 and 146.

    Besides these, there are other verses that support the same and explain them further:

    Ref. 2:173, 5:3 & 4, 16:115,

    The verse 6:146 tells us that why the strict prohibitions were inflicted on Jews (Torat) i.e. as a punishment due to their rebellion.

    @Edit:

    Neither Rabbit, nor crab, NOR any other with the exception of 4 things as given in the verses 6:145 & 146.

    6:145

    Say, "I do not find in the revelations given to me any food that is prohibited for any eater except: (1) carrion, (2) running blood, (3) the meat of pigs, for it is contaminated, and (4) the meat of animals blasphemously dedicated to other than GOD." If one is forced (to eat these), without being deliberate or malicious, then your Lord is Forgiver, Most Merciful.

    6:146

    For those who are Jewish we prohibited animals with undivided hoofs; and of the cattle and sheep we prohibited the fat, except that which is carried on their backs, or in the viscera, or mixed with bones. That was a retribution for their transgressions, and we are truthful.

    ---xxxx-----------

    A significant point to note is that EVEN the fat of pigs is allowed (it is not Haram). Because, in verse 6:146, we note that when God says Meat, he means meat, and when he says Fat, he means ONLY fat.

    In 6:145, we note that:

    1-  Dead Animal (the WHOLE animal is not allowed).

    2-  Running blood (this does not include the blood that remains trapped inside (for it is not running).

    3-  Meat (not Fat) of the pigs.

    4-  Animals dedicated or slaughtered in the name other than God . (Again the ENTIRE animal).

    Therefore even if something contains the fat of pigs, it is halal. It is NOT haram. Besides these 4, whatever is there, is Halal.
