  1. foods are VAT zero-rated unless they are sold for consumption on the premisis.

If your buying from a shop, supermarket or takeaway then there is not vat.

If your eating in a cafe, or resturant then there is vat. If you visit Mc Donalds you will notice they ask if your eating in or taking out this is so they can charge VAT

  2. None

  3. Link to relevant page of HMRC website.  http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPorta...

  4. Everything we buy/use/eat/drink has vat on.

  5. Different foods have different vat rates which are shown on till receipts with the letters D (exempt) and A for added VAT - check your till receipt to see the codes. Cakes are zero but biscuits and snacks are taxed so jaffa cakes are except as are Pringles as they contain less than 50% potato! in a recent court hearing!

  6. Supplies of food are VAT zero-rated unless otherwise specified in Group 1, Schedule 8 of the VAT Act 1994.

These take place when food is supplied for consumption on the premises on which it is sold, and when food is sold to be eaten hot. Therefore VAT is chargeable on all food sold for consumption in  restaurants, as well as on all hot take-away food sold in motorway service stations. Also caskes and ceral bars will attract VAT.

  7. Although the answers are correct, food is only VATable if the seller is registered. Many small  cafes and burger bars are not registered, so no VAT is charged.
