Question:

Which form of yoga do I choose?

I want to enroll in a yoga class soon but there seems to be so many variations, I wouldn't know which one I want. This might sound naive but I think I'm just looking for the basic, regular yoga, that most common, whatever that is. What are the different forms, what do they consist of, and which one do I want?

  3. yoga styles have become complex. its becoming popular and then what happens is enthusiasts take the elements of a practice and add their own variations. Like I think the originals come from Patanjili's teachings but then variation came from people like Iyangar to aid beginners by using props and today there's so many variation. with different inputs from different martial artists. inputs from fitness enthusiasts, inputs from yoga enthusiasts who have studied variations. the list is becoming endless.

Best hing to do is go into your local gym/place where yoga classes are taken and explain what you want to do and achieve and ask them to help you choose which is best for your needs.

to get a better understanding of yogs, read some websites just type in yoga and there is a wealth of information there. I would start with wiki to get a general idea and knowledge of its history and types and then move onto sites that are simple like www.abc-of-yoga.com or any of the others, sorry I haven't visited the ones I use in a long time so this is the only one I can remember cause its got an easy name but there's loads other out there that share similar/different understandings which are all helpful.

If you have sky there is loads of stuff on yoga. there is one channel 275 called body in balance (check their web for videos as well) where they constantly show loads of yoga stuff and its really good. There is Diva channel on 269 that do this excellent program called yoga tv in the mornings and at 3pm and its good as they start off with easy things and through the course of several weeks they develop the moves into the proper moves and offer alternatives for those unable to flex as much. from the accents I can tell its aussie! There is also Yoga on this asian channel 807 from 5:30 in the morn to 8 and from 7 to 8 in the evening. and its in english on weekends so you could record that and use that. Reason I mention this is cause its led by a guy who was paralyzed one side and through yoga he was able to become free of his paralysis and anyhow what he does is quite good whether his story is entirely true or not (reason I say this is cause its hard to believe but also you can see if you look closely at his face he does have that feature left from numbness on one side) and he concentrates on general yoga for all people of all types with all ailments or those simply to keep fit. Its real simple stuff as well with mixture of body exercises and breathing. His name is Swami Ramdevji if you want to look him up and you can get his stuff on cd/dvd in english too.

But best thing is what I suggested first just go the gym/place where yoga is done and have a discussion with them. Or even just join a beginners class and then take it from there getting thoughts from your instructor on which style is best for you.

    Good luck.

  4. The list at following site has short descriptions of many Hatha yoga styles:

    http://www.traditionalyogastudies.com/ar...

It's unlikely you will ever come across a list that claims to be complete since people (especially in the West) frequently modify styles by mixing elements from various disciplines.

So if you've heard of something that's not on above list, do a web search to find further info.

    Namaste',
