I know this is true as i have already seen the world cup and know the final scores.

Based on recent performances, it has to be New Zealand and Australia as the top 2, with South Africa as the next closest. Then a Northern Hemisphere side, but which one - realistically Scotland, Wales and England haven't a chance.

Ireland remind me of the England of 4 years ago, but are inconsistent. France depends which team turns up.

So here is my prediction

QF1: W Pool B Australia v RU Pool A England , Marseille (1400 BST)

QF2: W Pool C New Zealand v RU Pool D France, Cardiff (2000 BST)

7 October:

QF3: W Pool A South Africa v RU Pool B Wales, Marseille (1400 BST)

13 October:

If you take rankings into account, yes, the top four

But hang on a second... isn't it possible that a team worthy enough to be 3rd or even 2nd, who would lose to NZ for six points and almost scoring a try in a last assault and ending the match on NZ´s 5 yards, who would beat Wales, France and England easily, and Ireland TWICE in test matches, but since they are not members of any tournament they don't score many points a year, be placed 6th in the rank? That's right b*****s! Argentina will reach the semifinals!

The top four teams on current form (according to the IRB rankings) are NZ, Australia, France, and South Africa, in that order.

The IRB rankings are calculated on a continuous basis from  each test result and updated accordingly. Personally, having an understanding of the mathematical formula that these rankings are derived from, I have complete faith in their accuracy, and I would be surprised if those same four teams didn't make the semi finals.

As long as they win their pool matches, South Africa (A), Australia (B), New Zealand (C) and France (D) would be in different quarter finals. If they win these games, Australia and New Zealand would end in one semi, and South Africa and France in another. But, that is if they win all their pool games.  These are the strongest teams at present form. England (A), Wales (B), Italy or Scotland (C) and Ireland or Argentina (D) could upset the best laid plans . . .
