  1. All green plants need light for photosynthesis. They can use artificial light.

Mushrooms are grown in caves and old mines because they do not need light.

  2. With your limited space you should select the vegetables/fruits that you have room for and the ones that you most like.  You will need to upgrade your light source. HID, High Intensity Discharge are the light setups used by nurseries and many "home gardeners" with success. The two types usually seen are HPS, High Pressure Sodium, and MH, or Metal Halide. A good setup using these lamps will definitely give good results, if used properly HPS lamps are the lamps commonly used as streetlights.

  3. Lettuce and spinach. Possibly cucumber, maybe a cherry tomato. Salad green items will be best. Arugula (roquette or rocket salad), mizunna, even some celery. Everything needs light to produce food plants. You can increase what light you have by using a glossy white (not flat white but that would do) background to reflect light back out. Do not use a mirror as that just reflects heat (the wavelength changes). I'm guessing your on a balcony.

For flowers try the impatiens and begonias for color.

  4. You'll need more light to grow fruits than to grow vegetables. Potatoes are about the easiest thing to grow in adverse conditions. You can also try tomatoes; they are pretty easy to grow in a normal garden, but they would definitely need more light than the potatoes.
