i'm going from a hardtail and want to add a full suss. I ride trails mostly with some DH thrown in. I want something that will give me all round flexibility and good fun! some steep climbs thrown in! don't mind the hard work going uphill too much. i've looked around specialized fsr comp - kona kilapu - scott genius. Anyone got any other ideas or can narrow my options a bit? i'm open to suggestions, not hung up on name/looks but want decent components. hardtail is mongoose amasa. thanks very much

  1. Giant AC's pretty good.  Depending on your budget, Iron Horse makes adequate stuff (for the most part).  Almost everthing Specialized makes is great.  It looks like you have a high price range, judging by the fact that you're considering a Kona (by the way, that's an awesome bike). It looks like you're on the right track, keep looking at high quality bikes.  Also, go to your bike shop, find out what you're comfortable with travel (cushiness) wise. I thought I wanted a 7" travel bike, but I test rode one and decided it wasn't going to be efficient for the type of terrain I usually ride. Good luck!

  2. Yep, you really need to test ride a series of bikes. The combination of DH and climbs is not something that is common, so you are just going to have to search around and test ride until you find something that suits your needs.

  3. i switched to FS a year ago and love it. I would stick with giants and fuji. they come with better components than same priced competitors. rocky mountain are pretty good too

  4. Your budget might decide a lot.  Giant Reign or Reign X are excelent choices, Specialized Pitch, this are bikes that are not that expensive and provide a very good option.

With more budget, well, the sky the limit, and your wallet ache as well.  Banshee Rune, Titus El Guapo, Santa Cruz Nomad or Santa Cruz LT2, Turner 5 spot and other options, but be ready to spend more than 3 or 4 grand for it.
