Question:

Which gender is my cockatiel (behaviour based info)?

I'm still on the quest of finding out which gender one of my cockatiels is.

I have two cockatiels, one is definitely male and called Chalkie.

We got one that the man at the shop said was female because of the barring on the tail underside and my sister called 'her' Maud.

Maud seems to now be lacking the barring.

Chalkie serenades Maud -bobbing up and down whilst singing with half lifted wings- which perhaps makes me think Maud's female, but she just threatens him with an open beak!

Maud is a very nervous bird around humans which COULD be the reason that we don't here her/him sing much, but in the past has made some quiet but pretty calls, not just screeches.

I've never seen Maud serenade anything before.

Help is much appreciated.

  1. I think it's a female, but there's a chance it could be a male also. Look :

The head is sometimes hard to tell since my cockatiel is a female but has a lot of yellow, but the tail makes it much easier!

  2. the fact your male is doing the "i love you dance" i would assume maude is female, i would hope that birds would have ways of knowing these things, but in saying that i have seen a few bi parrots lol.

i always thought teals were ment to have colourd crees (nostrils) depending on the s*x.

  3. i have heard sometimes the barring fades. The cheek brightness sometimes is a telltale sign but the only way to really know is to find a random egg or surgically s*x them.

Threatening a male would be typical for females to do in other species if the courtship was unwarranted ( even in humans lol)... so maybe she just doesn't show love very well  yet or it could be she is a female and is making him work for her approval.

I betcha she is a girl bird.

** colored ceres are budgie  and keet traits

  4. Its hard too tell, best way is to dna test it :) but it looks like a female to me :D.

ooo one more thing, off this topic, did u build the aviary? tnx

  5. i think its a girl.

    girl cockatiels dont really sing.

  6. With a pied coloring it is going to be nearly impossible to tell unless you have a DNA sexing test done or you wait until Maud lays an egg, or doesn't.  As far as the behavior it's not unheard of for a male 'tiel to try to woo another male 'tiel so you can't really go by that either.
