  3. The one that I follow in my religion

Because religion is a subjective experience, not an objective one

Okay, that's the sort of cop-out answer you hoped we'd avoid...

I'm a Christian because I believe it is possible Jesus was God, or at least an attribute of God.  I'm a Catholic because I believe it was the Church assigned for St Peter to begin, and the traditions of the Catholic Church were solicited by God in Jesus' statement to St Peter and the Apostles that whatever they loose or bind on earth shall be loosed or bound in Heaven.

To me, the only real lesson from Jesus' actual life (apart from His teachings) that I can see is that He endured a lot of pain and suffering to show me that even a God walking on the Earth will pay the same price, quite the opposite of what Greco-Roman mythology usually taught about Gods.  There may have been a lot antecedents about miralcles and activities of prior gods which are in the Jesus stories, but none of them have a God that actually suffers for humanity to teach us something.  In other words, we can’t really see the world in any type of resurrected way until we endure the heartaches and the natural shocks that flesh is heir to...only then are we really able to know the strength Love can have in our lives.  Personally, I never really got St Paul's  idea of “original sin”, and none of my Jewish friends understand just where we Catholics get this Cosmic Debt thing from anyways (and considering that so few Jews converted 2000 years ago, I’d say they didn’t get it then either).  Besides that, even if there were such a Cosmic Debt, what good would a God dying do us?  We are like little children, and we learn by imitation more than instruction...so maybe God knew this, and maybe Jesus was a human attribute of God that endured a flesh and blood life even unto death, and maybe it’s the only way God could make us understand “Hey, this is the way Life is...but if you live through the bad times, there’s Love on the other side.”  I don’t know if I’m right, but I don’t believe I have any use for Heaven.  First, because my biology doesn’t come with me (no synapse firing in the brain anymore, and my eye-balls will be eaten by worms if the medical community can’t make use of them) and second, the whole thing sounds suspiciously like an extension of the utopian thinking first impaled on the Mediterranean World by Plato’s Republic.  It seems like so many people are yelling at God to do this and to do that for them, obsessing about winning the lottery or date-setting the end of the world...maybe God already did all He could do...He showed us how the world really is, and sometimes Justice, like every human institution, isn’t what it should be...but Love is beyond everything in the world, and if you can find it, if you really really find it...don’t ever take that for granted.  That may be all God tried to show us a long time ago.  May not seem like much of a theology to the Pope, but it's wholly mine, and nothing anybody could ever say could take it away from me....
