  1. The diet of Homo Neanderthalensis was pretty much solely based on meat, which may of also been the reason for their demise.  They hunted using Mousterian style stone tools in combination with spears and axes (Homo Erectus developed better technology but Neanderthals did not)

  2. It is likely that H. ergaster/erectus had the first significant reliance on meat. This is further evidenced by their robust build and their suitable stone tools, some of which are believed to have been used to cut elephant hide. H. ergaster likely hunted and gathered meat.

    H. heidelbergensis was known to utilize fire and had throwing spears and other tools more advanced than H. ergaster (better able to hunt).

    H. neanderthalensis had slightly better tool technology than H. heidelbergensis and a more robust frame. However, compared to H. sapiens, they were less skilled at forming hunting strategies, as is evidenced by the multitude of fractures found on their skeletons.

    H. sapiens was less robust, but had much better tool technology and hunting strategy.

In all cases, males surely hunted. This also holds true with chimpanzees, the only non-hominin primate that hunts flesh.

  3. Most homo's try to gather as much meat as possible.

    For instance homo erectus.
