"Professor Miguel Arciniega remembers the dichotomy of being a Mexican-American youth trying to learn what it means to be a man. Now he and his colleagues have developed an academic scale to define what it means to be either a gentleman or a “macho” man in the Mexican-American culture. Arciniega says he was raised to believe that men took care of their families and respected their wives. His family raised him to be un caballero – “a gentleman” – but his peers embodied machismo, which is the stereotypical, hypermasculine image of Mexican-American men as chauvinists who drink too much and fight too much."

What were the results after interviewing over 400 men of different ages and education? "Caring Men Are Happier Than Traditional 'Macho' Men, Study Suggests":

  1. Men.http://www.newswithviews.com/NWO/newworl...

  2. I'm Mexican-American and I'm quite happy with my life. I was taught to respect women and just not be such a jerk to them. Also, not all macho guys are mean and disrespectful to women as they are stereotyped. They just have the traditional mindset to that it's the man's job to protect and provide for his family. That doesn't always mean that the woman is put in a degrading position.

  3. I think any extreme is bad.  I agree with above poster.  People should be who they want not just what they think they should be.

  4. I think caring men are really happier because they don't have to keep up with the traditional view of their gender. They get to unleash their emotions towards things. Some fathers even play tea time with their daughters!

  5. "Caring Men Are Happier Than Traditional 'Macho' Men"

I don't think that its as cut and dry as that, traditional guys are not caring and caring guys can't be traditional or "macho"?.

More biased research, the idea being to demonise masculinity.

  6. A bit of both is nice.

  7. I think men (and women) are at their happiest when they can be whoever they want to be without worrying about how masculine or feminine they are.

  8. I'm Mexican and I have never heard such BS. He must be a Mexican't. To have Machismo is put the needs of your family first. And that requires Love and Honor above everything else. That sounds like Gentlemen qualities to me.

  9. I have always been told that "manners maketh the man" been able to kick a*s is a bonus, but good manners will take you far in life.

    *I can kick a*s to BTW :-D

  10. What are you talking?  A gentleman doesn't have to be a wimp.  Most strong masculine man are also gentleman that protect.

  11. The nicer the better I always say and yes to my knowledge masculinity means "being a jerk", last I heard anyway.
