My understanding it was a civil war in France under the reign of Louis XVI where the poor people were starving, crops were rotten or failed and had few to no rights under a feudal system/absolute monarchy.  The bourgeoise (not yet aristrocrat and not poor) who we would today call middle class used the unrest of the poor and violence was incited. The peasants and bourgeoise attacked and imprisoned the aristocracy and then knitted while they guillotined them one by one.  I loved history in school.
