  1. never heard of linguipotence...and neither did dictionary.reference.com

    Functionalism is when you view society as a bunch of interdependent parts, and those parts contribute to the stability of a society, if i remember correctly. When you have the same language, it is easier to have intra-societarial trading. It is easier to communicate and it definitely unifies a country if everyone speaks the same language.

    So on my opinion, functionalists are a group of sociologists that view language as having an important role in unifying members of a society.

    My head hurts....and I am not even sure societarial is even a word.

    Symbolic interactionist perspective or interactionists as you put it, focus heavily (according to intro text books at least) on micro level social behavior, and one of the chief components of study is the use and creation of language.
