Which guitar is the best to buy?

Question

I am going to buy a guitar soon, but wanted some input not fueled by a college student on commission at the guitar store :)

I am going to Africa next year, but in the meantime I will be playing guitar at church and other venues...so I want a good guitar that will be "small enough" to take overseas. Any recommendations for size or quality? I have looked into Taylor and Fender but am still shopping.

The best guitar on the market, by any means, is a Gibson.  But you're talking about shelling out a LOT of money (thousands probably) for this guitar, though it's worth every penny.  If I had the talent and the money, I'd own a couple.

It really comes down to the style you play. I assume worship, but hymns/contemporary could be in there also. Also are you looking for electric or acoustic (or both) because that changes things. I have a Squier Stratocaster (made by Fender). It's pretty low cost/low maintenance, however, I like Gibson alot. You are gonna pay more for a Gibson than Squier or Fender unless you get into really high dollar stuff, then it goes either way. That's on the electric front. Ibanez,and Dean for lower cost, seem to be outstanding acoustic guitars. I enjoy the sound quality and durability they offer. If you are really looking for a smaller guitar, you might try a "junior" edition Fender or Squier Strat - I dunno if Gibson makes a junior. you might compromise slightly on quality and range however, as these are generally made for smaller hands and beginners. same with acoustic -they are generally going to be less durable (but they are lower cost) -justremember tobuy a really tough hard-case if you're gonna be traveling with it.
