  1. I've just never liked the aesthetics of the A-bolt. It's a heck of a nice rifle, but just looks ugly to me. And I keep my little brother's 700 in 30-06 well-fed, along with a variety of 700's in other calibers for myself. To each his own.

  2. 30-06, You can buy it all over the world. Cheapest to buy and reload. It was the primary caliber for two world wars and is still going strong.

As to the A-Bolt, Why?  The Winchester model 70 is still one of the best,

and is cheaper and I think more reliable.  I hunt North American with a Remington Pump in 30-06 and a Remington auto loader in 30-06.  The only thing I have not killed with them is a bear. Locally I use a M1 Tanker in 30-06, I have shot deer, elk, and wild hogs with it. But locally the range is under 150 yards.  If I am going to shoot over 100 yards most of the time I take the Remington auto loader, It has a nice scope.

  3. Browning have just released a new X Bolt and its rifle p**n at its best. get online and check it out.

As for calibre i already answered about 4 questions today on that subject. Just get a .300win Mag and be done with it. Then use 130-150gr on the smaller stuff and 180-200gr on the big game.

    Cheers, Witty

  4. 30.06 best all around. Great for deer to elk!

  5. It just depends on what you are hunting.  The Browning A-bolt is top-of-the-line and the Remington 700 is no slouch.  Neither is the .30-06 caliber but the .300 Magnum is hotter.  Ammo available is world-wide for the '06 (as has already been mentioned) and cheaper than .300 Mag. ammunition.  So there you have it.  If you have not yet decided consider also the new S&W hunting rifles.  The bolt-throw on these reminds me of the Browning A-bolt but just a tad shorter.

  6. It depends upon where you are hunting. If you are in GA or any southern state, 30-30 is best. If you are a state like CO I recommend the .270. Africa? 300 Mag. On the other hand, 30.06 is the best all around choice for any terrain.

  7. I differ from many of the posters' advice regarding caliber.  I do not automatically recommend the .30-06 vs other calibers.  There are many of us who own several rifles in different calibers.  The .300 Win Mag has significantly more recoil than a .30-06 and the ammo is more expensive.  If you need to throw a 200 or 220 grain bullet far and hit something hard, then the .300 Win Mag is an easy choice over a .30-06.  If you are primarily shooting under 300 yards and Elk or smaller game, the .30-06 will kill everything plenty dead.

The A-Bolt is not my personal favorite rifle, but the actions are smooth and they are accurate.    If I had a choice between a BDL or an A-bolt for the same price, I would choose the BDL.  If you are looking at a ADL or a SPS for the same price, I would take the A-Bolt.
