I don't know alot about guns so I don't know what I should get. I live in the country and need a gun for self-defense against hogs mountain lions and to shoot at wild dogs and other unwanted pests. I need something that'll hold more than one round or reloads fast. Price is definatly a factor (<500). my local retail store include Bass Pro and Academy,Cabellas is reachable but way out of the way. If anyone could recommend a brand of ammo thats consistant that would be great to.(pistol or rifle)

  1. I wouldn't want a a mountain lion to be within shotgun range of me.

It's a full page of rifles under $500! Good Luck fightin' off those mountain lions lol. Also for ammo, I suggest this website

    www.cheaperthandirt.com

  2. 1 Pick is.....(insert drum rool here)

Remington 870 Express Combo, 12 gauge pump shot gun. Has two barrels (long field barrel for different size shot and a "slug" barrel for slugs). Changes configuration quickly from one configuration to another in minutes without any special tools. Even has tons of "tactical" stuff made for it. Lots and lots of options for this weapon. Less than $500.00 out the door with tax, ammo and a few accessories.

Flat out..it's one of the most popular, supported, versitile weapons ever made.

    #2 pick....

A lever action rifle of some sort. One of the most popular out there (for good reason) is the Marlin model 336, chambered on .30-30. Will last a life time.

P.S. I selected these beacuse the always function, aren't finicky about the ammo they eat, will never "jam" and a great guns to learn with. Based on your criteria.

Both are available at Basspro, or just about anywhere for that matter.

P.S. I sugget you get a .22lr pistol or rifle to practice with. Ammo is cheap..and they are fun to shoot. Ruger Firearms is a great maker of .22's

  3. Get a good 12 gauge shotgun. You'll have a lot of choices under $500

in a pressure filled self defense situation, a shotgun will be most effective as will it be for dispatching small pest type animals.

  4. The Remington Model 870 Express 12 Gauge shotgun is one of the most popular guns made in history for good reasons. By loading different kinds of ammo in it, you can use it for just about any purpose imaginable. Your Bass Pro shop or other sporting goods store will probably have a brand-new one for roughly $300 and a huge selection of ammo and accessories. You can buy boxes of 25 shells of target loads for practicing with the shotgun for about $7. You might enjoy shooting it so much that you'll discover a new hobby.

Any 12 gauge loaded with 00 buckshot or a slug will stop a mountian lion or hog charging you at close range. If the first blast doesn't do it, the second blast will.

You may be able to get the 870 Express Magnum version which holds 3-inch shells. A 3-inch shell with a magnum load of 00 buckshot will have enough recoil to potentially bruise your shoulder - but it would just about guarantee one shot-stopping power against a cougar as long as you hit in its face and chest as its charging.
