Question:

Which hamster would be easier?

I'm 12. My mum loves to see the hamster run around. I currently have syrian hamsters that are bought at a pet store in Malaysia. So I would think the quality there is not as good as the pet stores in the US. Its hard to hold my hamsters and they sneeze sometimes. Will it be any different if I get a winter white hamster from a breeder? Which are known in Malaysia to be quite good. My friend hamster that was bought from a breeder isn't afraid of his cat.

So the real question is..

Syrian from pet store vs. Winter White from breeder..

Opinions?

  1. winter from breeder tend to be tamer

  2. breeder syrian

  3. Syrian are much easier to tame and handle. It sounds as though you're keeping more than one, though. Are they in the same cage? Please don't do this if so, as they are solitary animals. When kept together after sexual maturity, they will fight to the death for dominance.

I understand that Winter Whites are quite popular in that part of the world, but you may find them more difficult. With time and patience, you can get a lot of pleasure out of a syrian hamster. Try to remain calm when handling them, they can sense when you're not, and try to handle them once a day so that they are very used to them.

As for the sneezing, try to change your bedding. Hamsters and other rodents have very sensitive respiratory systems which can be aggravated by wood shavings and similar substances. If you have Carefresh available to you in your country, I would recommend this. If not, speak to your pet shop and see what is available. You may find a type of bedding which has had the dust removed from it. This may clear up the sneezing.

    Hope this helps.
