Which has a faster interface to the system, a serial ATA HD or an external Fire Wire hard drive?

  1. Serial ATA is definitely faster. The SATA 2.0 spec is rated at 3.0 GBps. Firewire only goes up to 800 MBps (less than a third of the speed of SATA-II) While real world results wont get you these speeds ever (you are never going to see transfer rates as high as the theoretical speed) SATA is almost always going to be faster. The only external port that can boast the high speed of SATA is the SATAe (external) SATA.

    Firewire is a nice tech, and a great competitor to USB, but it still cant match the speeds of something built specifically for drives like SATA is.
