  1. Economics definitely. South Korea was totally devastated after the Korean War. They had no money, huge infrastractural damage, etc.  Millions lived in poverty at the time with thousands of unemployed men and beggars on the streets seeking for basic needs such as food. Even before the Korean War (and after their independence from Japan), North Korea was richer than the South! South Korea was the 2nd poorest country in the world, yet with determined and strong Korean citizens, and political reforms and trade, South Korea has managed to become a global economic powerhouse. They call it "The Miracle of the Han River". In less than four decades, this "hopeless" country was completely transformed into one of the world's most prosperous and wealthiest countries, a centre of business and commerce in Asia including highly developed world city (Seoul) and economic hub, having among the most advanced technological infrastructure in the world.

  2. .

  3. I would say economics and Buddhism. Most everything Koreans think about these days is tied to work and how they can earn more money or get promoted. This means working more hours, often without overtime pay.

It is the larger chabol companies that drive the economy here: LG, Samsung, Lotte, Hyundai, etc.

Buddhism still plays a strong role in their culture. At work you are expected to work the same amount of time as your team leader or manager. If your manager stays late, then you are expected to stay late as well.
