  1. By far, no question about it... The cheapest health insurance is the type that a corporation pays on your behalf.

Going solo - you have this problem:

Cheap Health Insurance means very little coverage.  If you get sick, it'll cost you FAR more to have cheap health insurance than it would to have good (expensive) Health Insurance.

Good (expensive) Health insurance is good to have if you have a chronic illness and/or get very sick.  But, it'll feel like a complete waste of money if nobody gets sick.

There is no one answer to your question.  You have to do the research to find what matches your particular situation.

  2. There is no one best company and with health insurance you get what you pay for.

When you shop for a new car you have a choice between the basic low end model with no options, a fully loaded luxury car, or something in between. Health insurance is the same. If you shop for the cheapest you'll get the basic low end model which may or may not have the benefits and coverage you are looking for. Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can find the best plan for your situation and budget and can explain what you get and, more importantly, what you won't get with the plan. There is no extra charge using an agent.

  3. The cheapest plans are the ones with the least coverage and the highest deductibles.

There's no short cut, with health insurance, you really do get what you pay for.  The average family plan, with a low/no deductible, is going to cost $1,000 a month.  For an individual, a low/no deductible plan is going to cost about $300 a month, if you're 30 and healthy.  Per person.  Kids will be cheaper.

You are going to have to go to a local, independent agent, who can match you up with a good policy, in your area, with a deductible you can afford, along with monthly premiums you can afford.

  4. don't go with a no name company or your claim may not get paid. cheap does not equal quality

  5. Health insurance is definitely not going to be cheap. Let me just throw that one out there.

But if you are looking for the best possible price and quality of insurance check out a site like http://www.healthquote360.com/ where they offer free quotes of all the top insurers in the nation.

There is also a good article on finding "cheap" health insurance.
