  1. running

  2. Long distance running/swimmin/biking.

Take it at a slower pace just make the distance longer.

  3. I'm not sure that there is a definitive answer on this. Running far will give you running endurance. Biking far would allow you to bike farther, not swim or run far. Same thing for swimming. If you want overall endurance, I would do all three to be the  most well rounded.

  4. Since biking, running and swimming all work three different areas of the body, the stamina they develop will vary.

First you must determine the type of stamina you are looking to obtain.  If you are looking to be able to play soccer for hours upon hours, then you should do some long distance running at a leisurely pace.  Every 5 minutes or so, double your pace and remain at that pace for a full minute.  Repeat as long as you can run.  This will develop the time of stamina it takes to run, stop, and continue running again as your body will get used to the stop and go action.

Likewise, a runner who can run for 10 miles may barely be able to swim a quarter mile because of the different muscle groups used to swim.  If you're looking for endurance in sports that require upper body strength, swimming is going to be your event.  Swimming develops the shoulders and back as well as the chest and arms.  Developing muscle in these areas allows the body to retain more oxygen and helps your respiratory system work with more efficiency, thus, increasing your stamina!

Biking is no doubt a great way to build lean muscle in the legs.  Mountain biking can also help develop strong core muscles in the chest and shoulders as well.  Frequent bikers will come to find that their stamina is not impacted by the incline or decline in the terrain as their bodies have been trained to push hard, and then push even harder when an incline approaches.

The most efficient way to increase your stamina (aka the best way) is to swim.  Swimming involves more core muscle groups than any endurance sport.  Legs, arms, chest, back, neck and even the lungs are tested heavily.  While you're swimming, however, feel free to plant your feet on the base of the pool and try to run with your head just above the water.  The resistance you'll find while running under water is unmatched and can help maximize your time in the water.
